Without looking at mine because it is raining right now, the wedge on the door usually fits up so that it depresses the light switch in the door and that opens the circuit. If the switch can't be depressed then the circuit will remain closed and hence the lights staying on. If the wedge on the door lock can be replaced by itself or repaired, then do that. Otherwise you are going to buy a new latch assembly and when you see how much it costs, you are going to ask your passengers to be more careful. If you are lucky and the problem is really the switch itself, then it should be a cheaper and faster fix involving about a single screw and plug.
