Transmission Fluid Change

How many people here have changed transmission fluid in their 2007 camry?

If so, at what mileage?

Also, any good place to buy some airfilter at good price?

It is good practice to have the trans flushed at 30k miles at your local area Toyota dealership with approved Toyota fluid.

Any part store for the Air Filter.

I co-own an '07 Camry with the 4 cyl motor - automatic. Haven't been down the tranny fluid change road on this car yet, but I would consider this first:

- Can you actually change the transmission fluid on your '07 Camry? Some of the '06/07 models equipped with 6 cyl motors do not have a drain plug on the transmission pan. I do not know if this holds true for the 4 cyl. More often than not, if you have a transmission fluid dip stick under the hood, you "might" be able to drain and change the fluid. One of the tech moderators here showed a setup in an '08 the other day and it requires equipment/procedures that are a bit different than your avg. drain/refill process.

- If it can be done in your case, you can get the FSM(factory service manual) for your car at:

http://techinfo.toyota.com

1 day subscription - $10 + you may also download all TSBs.

- Check owners manual for the proper transmission fluid. If type IV or WS, buy it from a Toyota dealer. Yes...some here say there are alternatives to the dealer fluid, but why gamble with something this important?

Here we go again............. 2007 V6 6-speed procedure........... Keep in mind, you dont need a drain plug to perform a "Flush Service" V6 uses Toyota Genuine ATF WS

AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID

ADJUSTMENT
  1. BEFORE FILLING TRANSAXLE WITH FLUID
    • This transaxle requires Genuine ATF WS transmission fluid.
    • After servicing the transaxle, you must refill the transaxle with the correct amount of fluid.
    • Maintain the vehicle in a horizontal position while adjusting fluid level.
    • Proceed to step 2 if the oil pan, valve body, drive shaft, and/or torque converter has been removed or if the oil seal has been replaced.
    • Proceed to step 3 if oil leakage has been repaired and if the oil cooler and cooler hose have been removed.
  1. FILL TRANSAXLE PAN WITH FLUID
(a)Remove the engine under cover LH.(b)Remove the engine under cover RH.(c)Remove the under front fender apron seal RH.

(d)Remove the refill plug and overflow plug.

(e)Fill the transaxle through the refill hole until fluid begins to trickle out of the overflow tube.

(f)Temporarily install the overflow plug.
  1. FILL TRANSAXLE WITH FLUID
(a)Fill the transaxle with the correct amount of fluid as listed in the table below. Standard capacity

HINT: If you cannot add the listed amount of fluid, do the following:

(1)Temporarily install the refill plug.(2)Allow the engine to idle with the air conditioning OFF.(3)Move the shift lever through entire gear range to circulate fluid.(4)Move the shift lever to the P position.(5)Wait for 30 seconds with the engine idling.(6)Stop the engine.(7)Remove the refill plug and add fluid.(8)Reinstall the refill plug.(b)Temporarily install the refill plug to avoid fluid splash.
  1. CIRCULATE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID
(a)Allow the engine to idle with the air conditioning OFF.(b)Move the shift lever through entire gear range to circulate the fluid.
  1. CHECK FLUID TEMPERATURE NOTICE: The fluid temperature should be less than 40°C (104°F) before beginning the fluid temperature check.

(a)With the intelligent tester1)Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.(2)Select the tester menus: OBD/MOBD, ENGINE, DATA LIST and NT.(3)Check NT OIL TEMP.(4)Allow the engine to idle until the fluid temperature reaches 39°C (102°F) . DLC3

(b)Without the intelligent tester (Using D shift indicator)1)Connect terminals CG (4) and TC (13) of the DLC3 using SST.
SST 09843-18040(2)Move the shift lever back and forth between N and D at 1.5 seconds interval for 6 seconds .(3)The D shift indicator on the combination meter comes on for 2 seconds when the fluid temperature is within the appropriate temperature range.(4)The D shift indicator will come on again when the fluid temperature reaches 40°C (104°F) and will blink when it exceeds 45°C (113°F) .(5)After confirming that the D shift indicator turns off, move the shift lever to the P position and remove the SST from terminals CG and TC.
  1. CHECK TRANSAXLE FLUID LEVEL NOTICE: The fluid temperature must be between 40°C (104°F) and 45°C (113°F) to accurately check the fluid level.
(a)Remove the overflow plug with the engine idling.

(b)Check that the fluid comes out of the overflow tube. If fluid does not come out, proceed to step 7. If fluid comes out, wait until the overflow slows to a trickle and proceed to step 8.
  1. ADD FLUID
(a)Install the overflow plug.(b)Remove the refill plug.(c)Add the fluid until it comes out of the overflow plug.(d)Wait until the overflow slows to a trickle.(e)Install the overflow plug with a new gasket.(f)Install the refill plug with a new gasket.(g)Stop the engine.
  1. AFTER FILLING TRANSMISSION
(a)Install the overflow plug with a new gasket.
Torque: 40 Nm (408 kgf-cm, 30 ft. lbs.) (b)Install the refill plug with a new gasket.
Torque: 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.) (c)Stop the engine.

I think for 4 cylinder autos you'll still have the drain plug and a dip stick tube since the transmission is the same as in Gen 5.

For my car, I think the fill plug is towards the back of the transmission. Just drain the stuff and then fill with 75W-90 until it starts coming out of the fill plug. I haven't even hit 8000 miles yet so it'll be a while before I do my transmission oil. I've already located the drain and fill plugs though.

I was told that the 07 camry uses some special transmission fluid by the service guy that don't need to be replaced until 100k miles.

Is that true? Or is he smoking something?

Read your manuals/maint schedule for that answer.............

I changed my transmission fluid at 5,000 miles to get all the debris out of the new transmission. I plan on changing it again at 20,000 miles to keep it running smooth. Make sure you use the dealership transmission fluid (ATF-IV)..something like that.

My '06 Avalon uses Toyota WS transmission fluid. The term "WS" is stamped on the transmission fluid dipstick just above the HOT mark with some trailing numbers.

I wonder if the term "IV" is stamped on transmission dipsticks that require Toyota Type IV?

Yep, Type T-IV is stamped on the dipstick.

why all the complication above?

On my gen5 I thought, I can just drain from the tranny drain plug and refill the amount that came out and then check the level after driving for a few miles

If you have a pan drain plug and a dipstick under the hood, you "might" still be able to drain/refill in a traditional manner. Further up in this thread a tech showed what's involved with a newer model.

The biggest issue for me is being sure to use the correct fluid. Some Toyotas(newer that is) use Type-IV; some use WS. You have to be careful and read your documentation before buying fluid.

I went for an oil change today and said I wanted my transmission fluid change. The cost was estimated around 200ish.

However, he then said the car is not ready for a tranny change (currently 20k miles) and it should be change close to 90k.

Dang, I was used to the accord where i change every 12k miles...haha
