07 Camry got rear-ended, not a scratch, but other car's front end nearly destroyed,

My 07 Camry got rear-ended.

I was completely stopped and the dude behind me didn't stop in time.
His Honda's front end was completely messed up. His front bumper,
headlights, hood, and grille all broke or were crumpled. The radiator
& fans were pushed up against the engine. The engine shifted almost
a few inches to the rear.

Strangely....

My Camry's rear bumper didn't even have a scratch. I do have Scothgard
film installed on the rear bumper, so that may be why... There was some
paint from the other car, but I buffed it off and there was apparently
no damage to the bumper. How is this even possible??????

However, I'm worried about internal damage to the rear of my car.
The insurance adjustor will look at it tomorrow afternoon. What
should I have them look at? Should I insist that they remove the
rear bumper cover to check for any damages?

Also, the other guy and I just happened to be insured by the
same insurance compay. Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Thanks for any info!

You may think there isnt a scratch, Look under your car behind the rear bumper, Bet the reinforcement is bent.....

+1

If there was that much damage to the other car I'd bet there is some damage to yours also.

I've found it works very well to have both cars with the same insurance company.

yah you would definently want them to do a tear down and take the rear bumper off the see the damage underneath. the bumper is a thin plastic which is designed to pop back out most of the time, while the medal and foam underneath is what took most of the force.

The car may have dived under your car under hard braking.

Have the plastic bumper cover removed and the metal and foam underneath inspected.

Having the same insurance company is potentially a bad thing because it means they have to pay out and thus possibly skimp on repairs. If companies were different, your insurance would ask the other insurance co to pay out and nothing out of your own insurance co's pocket.

where was the paint located? I would've kept the paint on the bumper... so that just incase there really is no damage, you get money to get your bumper repainted

If you look at the bottom of the plastic bumper where it attaches to the metal frame, there are two plastic clips (one on either side of the car) that bolt to the frame. I guarantee they're both broken. I actually broke one of mine by backing into a pile of snow...

just an update....

I dropped off the car... the insurance adjustor estimate was:
---> $5200

(but may be a little more if any other damage is discovered once
they start work) They'll need the car for 8 work days....

That's just crazy.... there were even scratched on the rear bumper cover...
but I guess internal damage are always much worse....

Damn, take the money and trade the car in. You won't lose $5,200 on the trade in and you could get a new car.

That's it? With my body damage as well as a whole new rear riight suspension, my preliminary estimate came out to $11,000.

Just a heads up an entire new V6 OEM exhaust system is close to $600. For that scratch, any aftermarket system doesn't seem so bad.

Gen5

Camry has I think like a 2/4 solid steel bar that runs along the back bumper. my wife rear ended my neighbors car while parking in reverse, my rear bumper had no damage, but the ford truck was $7,000 in damage, his whole two doors were push inward, lol. i think the strongest part fo the car is the rear bumper.

but i bet that car kept you safe with very minor injuries.

i really understand that all newer cars are made like this but keep in mind that it is to keep the passengers safe in case something like this occurs.
