Northern California South Bay Mechanic Advice

Just wondering if anyone has a favorite mechanic that won't rip them off when installing aftermarket parts. I'm kind of tired going to my gf's family mechanic, he seems to rip me and my gf off while giving good deals to her family.

Don't know why myself -- he quoted me 450 to install my springs, pretty much the only reason why I did it myself.

I don't want to go back to him, but I just wanted to see if anyone had a mechanic who's reasonably priced and won't rip me a new one for installation -- I got a good deal on a set of 4 KYB GR-2 Struts and couldn't pass it up. if the guy is good and won't kill on price, I might go back for repeated service.

Thanks!

Thats because you are asking a mechanic to do custom work. You need to find a shop that does that type of work on a regular basis. He probably only gave you the price because your GF's family. Most deceint mechanics won't do stuff like that.

I'm not asking him to do custom work, just replace springs, springs can be messed up and need to be replaced -- struts same thing, it's not like i'm asking him to design an intake and shove it in there for me. it's just a replacement job.

As far as anyone else -- anyone have a favorite mechanic in mind in northern cali area?

Most mechanics spend all there time fixing broken cars. They put them/fix them to be just like OEM. You are asking him to take off a perfectly functioning part of the car, and replace it with another part that will alter the cars original performance. That is custom work.

Any good mechanic takes responsibility for their work. I know your thinking "whats the big deal?", but you need to realize that he usually buys the parts that he installs, and warrants the parts and his work. He probably doesn't feel comforable doing it.
