Gen5 level with me about lowering springs...

couple questions... how practicle are they if its going on a car that you drive every day. the roads where i live are terrible. will this be a factor? whats the best? trd? how low should you go for 18 inch wheels? how bad is the ride gonna be on my car with say for example some trd springs and 40 sidewall ratio on 18 inch wheels? is it gonna suck to take road trips with a setup like this? also im a DIYer, are springs something that need to be professionally installed or could i do it myself? thank you for your time...

short answer to this would the following:

You can do it yourself -- none of the suspension install "needs" pros. there's no real best, it's almost all opinionated. You can lower as much as you want depending on the ride that you want.

lower tire wall = harsher ride
lower springs = harsher ride
stiffer struts/shocks = harsher ride

you can kind of take a look at which direction this is going.
do a quick search -- you'll find your answer.

im glad you responded cause i like your set up you got going on. how is your ride quality? its weird cause your tires definitly dont look like they have a 50 sidewall ratio.

edit: they look much lower profile tires than 50..

it's a 50, ride is bumpy on stock struts -- i'm getting KYB-GR2 struts, not performance (no one makes performance struts for the gen 5 camry)

that will last me a while and be a stiffer ride, i'm getting tower bar and a whiteline RSB for my car.

then one more would be to detail my rear bumper since my rear bumper has scratches.

I love my car and it's ride though it's already stiffer... if you're on bumpy roads, keep it stock -- you'll regret it. I have roads 1/2 way there, I now have to avoid. also watch out for deep jumps, they'll scrape -- OH YEAH SCRAPE!.

/\ ok. unfortunatly im going to have to take your advice. you have no idea how bad these roads are here. ive never seen anything like it. im in jackson mississippi on business and unfrotunatly have to stay here til next summer. (this place is hell on earth). could i compromise with just wheels? i want some 18 inch lexus wheels. btw, last question, did you do the lower yourself?

edit: see i kind of figured that lowering was out of the question with MS roads the way they are. so i thought that a comprimise would be 18 inch wheels with a good side wall and those oem ground kits.

you can get 18's with high tire walls so that you don't feel the road, 18's should be okay IMO, but think about the bumps and the tires, you might bend those rims on a hard hit at 18's 17's are safe -- and I think they look great!

I climbed a curb making a left at around may be 25 mph in my 2002 XLE.

The stock 16 ich rims awith the 215/60/15 tires went over those very well... I was happy that I had good sidewall and a good ground clearence... otherwise I might have busted something under the car

I use to live in LA, SGV actually -- I drive to LA, and it's not as bad as it is in SF Downtown, the roads here are horrible plus traffic is bad. Some streets are bad, but it's improved over SF, also San Jose roads are horrid as well -- there are long floaty bumps that I hate the most.

I have a g5 too- what i'm doing, to basically let it stay as a good daily driver is Tein H-Tech and 225/45r18. I figured, those wheel & tire companys are playin' it safe w/40 profile tires on 18's... so i'd push it to 45. If my g/f really doesn't want it lowered, i'm throwin some 225/50/18s on there.

BTW- my g4 (sig) is also on 215/50r17 and the wheel place wanted me to put on 45s.

50's are closest to stock size over all when you're talking about 17's... 45's a bit smaller and will effect how many rotations per mile (which is what I base everything on)

You can't make a blanket statement about the diameter/rotations per mile of at tire based on the profile. A 50 series tire means that the side wall is 50% as tall as the tread width. So if you get a really wide tire, it will be taller. Even with the same 50 series.

I have a 50 series tire on 17s, it's pretty smooth to me, roads aren't too bad here.

Plus i'm like 2 hours from Jackson lol. I've got the TRD springs on SE struts, TRD RSB and stock strut bar.

rides really good to me
