5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
As some of you may remember, I hit a nasty pothole that torqued my hood, bent a wheel and blew a tire. And now there's an odd popping and rumble sound underneath that's been going on ever since that F'ING hole. Finally got a chance to look under there with my buddy when I was rotating my tires.
1. Front right suspension- Shock and rubber boot has fluid all over it. The boot is bone dry on the outside but there's a bunch of goop on the inside. The other 3 are fine and bone dry minus small amount of lube. Possible blown shock with fluid leaking into the boot and down?
2. Front right brake system- Rotor is FREE FLOATING. When I took my wheel off, the rotor shifted. I grabbed a hold of it, and it wiggles around freely like its just hanging on. I forget how to take the caliper off, otherwise I would have tried to check out behind the rotor. The other front rotor is fine and does not move. WTF! How'd a damn pothole break one of the strongest points on my car!?
So those are my two issues that I could see. There may be more, but we'll have to see when I take it up to the shop tomorrow. I'm very saddened by this. by the way, this shop has never been able to locate a problem the last 2 times they saw it. I'm sorry but last I checked a free floating rotor is PROBLEM! Jesus tapdancing christ. Updates will come as I resolve this issue.
Sorry to hear of your damage. When I had my $7000 of damage (roof + hood), I made sure to get MANY opinions before enacting any kind of repair or replacement.

Sounds like he busted a bearing in the front at least. Or like TRD said, broke the spindle, but I don't think the car would even drive with a busted spindle. You should also get your chassis checked. You may have tweaked the chassis. Bent hood is a really bad sign. That must have been some pot hole.
Were you driving fast and didn't see it? That sux bro..I hope all turns out well for you.

That sucks. What was your speed when you hit the hole? Was it a direct drive over, or at an angle? Also, depending on where and how bad, there may be some municpal liability.

wow, now im definitly not getting my car lowered....
Problem is my car is not lowered, at the time I had low-pro hankook tires on there. And TRD a free floating rotor means that when your wheel is off, you take a hold of the rotor and it wobbles around and moves alot more than it should. The rotor should move a little bit because the wheel and lug nuts hold down the rotor, but I can get a good angle of motion on that rotor. More than it should be. And to answer the question of the pothole, I was going about 35, I had just made a left turn through a traffic light and it was dark, so good luck seeing the hole. When I hit the hole, my car actually dropped down into the hole and the wheel slammed into the other side. The hole was big enough that I could put one foot in and turn it completely around(size 13 shoes). And when I say it bent the wheel, it really bent it, not like a little change in the curve, it angled it in cuz it hit so hard, and the front tire popped a couple ribs on the sidewall and left a nice bubble. I've taken my car to the shop now, the shop that I prefer and is more reliable, and they're gonna look at it. The guy said that if the shock his blown that he's gonna replace all 4, and he's gonna get me some decent gas shock.

Dude, I feel your pain as I'm reading your thread. Hope you'll get better luck soon.

Yea man, at least ur in catonsville where the roads are actually maintained to an acceptable level by the county. I'm in Montgomery, and this happened in Silver Spring. It sucked. And the update on my car. The shock was blown just as I thought when I saw the oil, the sway bar link is all torqued to hell, on the right side. My rotor has been secured. So I'm getting the sway bar links replaced on both sides, and new gas shocks on both sides in the front. Nothing is bent, no frame damage, so I've lucked out, per se. I also have 94,000+ plus on the original plugs so I have them replacing the sparks, especially since I do so much driving that I get an oil change every month, which means that I'll probably meet the 100K before the middle of October
If one strut is blown, you don't have to replace all four.
A rotor that is loose when the wheel or lugnuts aren't on is just that, a loose rotor. Free floating is obviously a term you made up. The brake pads rest against the rotor, which are held in place by the caliper, which is bolted to the spindle.
There are fixed calipers and floating calipers. Maybe you're confused with caliper terms.
