Gen5 Armrest cover keeps popping up

Hello,

My 2003 Camry LE starts to have an annoying problem: the armrest cover cannot be locked securely and keeps popping up every 2 minutes Apparantly the latch on the cover does not fully engage the hole on the plastic shelf piece below the cover. I took off the cover and found that the latch seems working fine but its position does not match the hole. All the screws are fixed so there is nothing to adjust. What is the problem? Any suggestion?

Thank you.

don't know what the problem is, but you could try using more force to close the armrest. or, make the latch hole larger, so that the latch can catch it better.

had this exact same problem after installing the ir sensor for the swi-x in the armrest. know what i did to fix it? i cut a small strip of electrical tape narrow enough to fit in there and wrapped it around the little bar twice. just enought to make the latch things diamater big enough to secure when you close it. its worked now for 2 months no problem.

edit: it also made the 'click' when you close the armrest have a 'soft' feel to it. it seems more luxurious now!

LMAO. i had the same annoying problem a few months ago! but somehow, it cured itself- probably cuz i kept banging the armrest locked due to frustration. LOL.

but seriously, i think it was also caused by temperature- i used to park it outside in the cold & hot everyday without driving the car for days in a row when i was dorming. it's garaged every once in a while now. ever since i stopped dorming, i never had the problem.

it used to be really annoying though. popping out in the middle of driving almost every day.

I probably won't be laughing when it starts happening to me but hey.....for now, it's funny.

Thank you for all your suggestions! Tape sounds like a good temporary fix. But is there any permanent solution? If nothing works, I may want to change to a sliding armrest. Does that work?
