5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Whats up guys? I have a 2005 camry se v6. Does anybody know how I can get some extra ponies out of this massive 3.3 ltr engine before i put on my trd muffler and injen intake? I find it hard to believe that this engine pumps out so little. Any tips would help thank you.
Massive??? Nothing you can do will really worth the money you spend, except perhaps and supercharger, or turbocharger. The biggest improvement would be to trade it in, and buy a 07' SE V6, or better yet an IS350.

Sorry to dissapoint, but the 225hp figure is only accurate before they adopted the new hp rating. Once the new ratings were adopted, the hp output for the 3.3L went down to 210hp.
The same thing happened with the Avalon - in 2005 it was rated at 280hp, for 2006 with the same engine (now in the Camry), it was rated at 268hp.
All this doesn't really mean much in terms of performance though - still the SAME engine, SAME performance - just different way the hp was measured. BTW- I heard that the IS350 was rated around 320hp before the new ratings came in and brought it to 306hp.
but yeah, like Hardpoint said, get a newer SE or IS350 - the old 1MZ and 3MZ series engines are no longer at the top of their class.

What he said (the part about the IS). Get something that can actually get all those horsies to the pavement instead of wildly torque-steering and hopelessly understeering. Kinda pointless to put a SC on something that only turns that extra power into tire smoke. Vive la RWD!
I'm pretty sure that this topic has been brought up many times with both the Gen 5-5.5 V6 and I4 engine. No one EVER found anything significant. Just be happy with the fact that the V6 engine you have was quoted at 225 HP. I have a 2003 I4 so I was quoted much lower than that in terms of horsepower. I'd rather not even look for the actual figure to verify.
You bought a family sedan. Sorry. The newest Toyota and Lexus vehicles are tuned a little more to a non-family, younger crowd and have a good amount more power and bigger stock wheels (a common complaint, lol).
As others said, if you really want power and a sport sedan you should go for the Lexus IS350 with its rather large output 3.5L V6 engine and RWD. But there is always a sacrifice. This sacrifice comes in less room in the cabin and a higher price tag. IS350 isn't a family car.

I agree. It is definitely adequate. Of course, more horsepower is always better if it is achievable.

Thank You all for your feed back. I do agree with the majority and buying a new 07camry or is350 would feed my need for extra power. Jas3600 im with you on keeping this forum going. Hopefully one day someone will find out how to get those extra ponies out of the engine. I thank you all once again and look foward to more threads on this topic. peace!!!

If you reflash the ECU and put in premium gasoline, would you still get 225 hp? The reason I'm asking is because although the Camry was re-rated to 210, the Lexus ES330 wasn't with the same engine, and Lexus requires premium. I have always put in premium into my SE V6, and when the ECU was updated from the dealer, I felt more power than before.
Well, I have a DIY for more horsepower that you can try. All you will need is your car, a blindfold, and some windex.
1) Put your car on the side of the street in an inconspicuous place.
2) Pop the hood and spray windex on top of your engine cover.
3) Get inside the car.
4) Make sure all the windows are rolled down and your radio is off.
5) Put the key into the ignition and crank your Camry up.
6) Make sure the car is in Park or you will get no horses, just corpses.
7) Put your blindfold on so you see nothing.
8) Next, step on the gas really hard.
9) You will feel and hear the extra horsepower. Caution: It will not work if the blindfold is off.
