Gen5 Install side curtain airbag for 2003 Camry LE?

My 2003 Camry LE doesn't have a side airbag. I just saw the IIHS side crash test data and the results really worries me This is my daily commute car and I intend to keep it for a few more years. So is it possible to install a side curtain airbag at least on the driver side? IIHS said there was a structural redesign in 2004, and they don't have any data for 2003 model w/ it. Has anybody done this before? Thanks a lot.

You can, But you would be looking at several thousand dollars for all the proper parts to install.

Can you elaborate on what parts are involved? I thought airbags are pretty independent subsystems...

buy a car that has them if you're that eager to get them, it will work out better for you and you can pretty much guarantee it will deploy if needed, rather than your own cost effective DIY method.

The air bags themselves(1500 each, for curtains, 320 each for seat bags), Air bag control module(400), crash sensors(108 each), wiring harness(about 500), probably a Body control module.

I wonder why so many people feel like airbags are the end all of safety devices. Your '03 without side airbags isn't a rolling deathtrap. I agree that they give peace of mind, but in 5 years, when the 2013 Camrys are rolling off the assembly line with bungi cord whiplash protection systems, and pedestrian standards mandate that all cars need to be covered in soft, freshly baked cinnamon bread, rather than the terrible sheet metals of today, are you going to feel comfortable driving in an '08 like mine with only 7 airbags?

And you HAVE to install every component, or they will not function at all

Yeah, prohibitively expensive bordering on insane. Plus, you would have to learn how to do it yourself, because I can't imagine any right thinking technician would take it upon himself to rig airbags into a customers car that weren't there in the first place. There would be lawyers fast roping from helicopters all over that shop if something went wrong.
Besides, here's the next innovation in safety: neckbelts!
