Gen6 I4 RPM Flair

I have been noticing some odd transmision behavior. It happens on a slight incline, trany in 5th at 50mph or so. As I start to accelerate, I tip the shift lever to 4. Speed and RPM start to rise, and I shift back into D. At this point the RPM's jump 300 to 400 higher. The trans is still in 4th. If I shift back into 4, the RPM's drop back. Into D and the RPMs jump again. Is the transmision slipping or is this behavior some sort of tachometer malfunction. I can't hear any difference in engine noise, but I'm not accelerating very hard at all so I wouldn't expect to. Any thoughts?
