5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have bought an 08 Camry SE with non JBL system with (moonroof/sunroof) which I'm finding out that the $700 dollars I probably should have spent now but i didn't since i figured it would be a pretty easy job. I recently purchased a JBL six disc changer from ebay(pretty cheap and new).
I was wondering if this is a direct swap or do I have to modify something or can it be done at all. I have printed out the directions from camrymanuals.com which has been very helpful. I have been reading and it seems as though it isn't a direct plug and play. I don't want to go the aftermarket route yet unless its my only choice.
Also I know that the jbl systems have bluetooth buttons on the steering wheels. Is this also an option i can put in from ordering parts(bluetooth buttons/module) and harness. It looks as though if you took apart the steering wheel, that piece would come off and all you would have to buy is a replacement. Also since i have moonroof/sunroof, Is a mic already in there or is that going to be a problem with the bluetooth. I haven't called the Dealer on that yet, but i figured i would ask around before i did since there is plenty of good help here. Many thanks in advance.
I am new to this place but not new to forums. Before anyone just says use the search button or bump or research. Already have and have not come up with anything yet. I appreciate anyone's advice on this and this is why I am posting for advice/opinions. Not redirection. Sorry to sound like a d*$k but im not trying to. Also anyone that has answered my pm's or replies. Many thanks in advance.
i dont believe its just a swap out. the JBL system is run by a factory amplifier. without that, i dont think the 6-disc will work. double check with the gen 6'ers tho

thanks for the info and quick response. Anyone else want to give a go at this.

Take a look at my thread titled "2007 Camry Aftermarket Headunit...With Pics". I didnt have JBL and the nav/bluetooth setuo in my LE when I purchased it. The unit I bought cost me half of what the factory system cost and it still had full nav and bluetooth. IT looks dead to stock and the color matched perfectly to the dash. Might be a good option for you, but you'd lose the money you invested in the JBL headunit.
Thanks for the quick reply. I am waiting to here back from oem value about a few questions i had for them. I did see your pic on your aftermarket which looks pretty good i might say but i didn't want to spend more than 600.
Im not worried about navi because i have an awesome garmin unit that i take everywhere and i swap out of cars.
Allright, for those who didn't get a JBL factory-installed sound system as an option in Gen 6 camry, here is an info. Now it's possible to upgrade the stock factory system to JBL and have all features like bluetooth steering wheel controls, microphone, 6-disk changer, amplifier and speakers installed for about $1900 from Toyota dealer.

I am happy for now with my JBL system (but I know I will mess with it when I get some time), but I would not try to upgrade a none-JBL system to a JBL-factory system. I agree that in that case an aftermarket install would be cheaper, simpler and better than the JBL (depends how much you spend of course). Upgrading to a factory installed option is just way to cumbersome in most cases and costs much more than the sticker price of that option (here $700 for the JBL).
In case you want to do it: you need to exchange the headunit, exchange most of the wiring harnesses, add the JBL amp under the passenger seat, replace all four speakers (woofers in door, 2 way in back) and add the mid's in the dash. You also need to think about the micro for the voice activation, hookup for your sat radio if you like one, steering wheel controls or adapters and some smaller stuff....

My goal was to have an OEM navigation unit from oemvalue.com so it matches the factory look of the dash, JBL amplifier installed and upgraded speakers (polk) as well as bluetooth controls and mic. I'll probably can do it myself, but wanted to get it installed professionally at toyota dealer. Unfortunatelly, I didn't get Camry with JBL couple weeks ago when I bought the car as I didn't checked carefully that the factory stock speakers are of such bad quality.
your best bet is to upgrade to after market speakers and head unit. I had the jbl in my 05 before i got sick of the sound and upgraded everything. Also you might want to check up the audio forum here for some tips
also for 1900 dollars you could put in an amazing system in your car.
so all in all the jbl system would be a waste for you now even though i thought it was a waste for me when i bought the car.
