....and when the dealer gets through with you, you will misplace your car, your children, your wife, and your tax refund before you misplace that key again. This is the price of technology.

I know that a 'New key' would cost around $300.00.
You have a used one from eBay? You would have to pay for the re-programing of it...and they would have to re-program any other 'key' you would have for your car as well...

I lost a SmartKey to my 07Prius, got replacement key and programmed it at Toyota dealer. Cost $285.70. Local locksmiths and Toyota told me it had to be done at Toyota dealer. This feels like an illegal tie-in, especially because I could not find an 07 Prius (in September 07) without the Option2. I never wanted the SmartKey, but evidently many Toyota dealers (the whole midAtlantic Region, USA) decided not to order them without at least Option2, which included only stuff that I didn't want. So they sold me stuff I didn't want or need, and now they intend to charge me not $1.50 like the local hardware store for a replacement key, but $285.00! whenever I lose the key. And they said "thousands of dollars" if I had lost both the Smart Keys, because then they'd have to replace some computer in the car!
Is anyone else suspicious about this sort of marketing? Were Toyota Prius 07 widely available without Option 2?

Even if you did not have a SmartKey the car manufacturers are starting to integrate RF chips in the keys (immobilizer security feature). Cars will not start without the immobilizer system recognizing the key
The days of the $1.50 key for your car are coming to an end.
