5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Its sad to see this terrible thing happen, I'd rather have the car destroyed and not loosing any lives. Especially for a 4 month old baby. It must be really tough to live without parents.

camry a tank? does that mean it is built tough? or is designed well to crumple / absorb energy or is it both.
I had a 96 taurus before my gen 5 camry and I still feel that the gen3 taurus was built stronger and would suffer less damage (car wise) than a camry. the sheet metal used in american cars seem a bit more thicker than most japanese
My friend responded to that scene, he told me that the Camry looks repairable, they just opened the front doors with no problem, usually on impacts like that the front doors crumple and you can't even open them... He said everyone one was amazed on the condition of the Camry... But it is unfortunate that two people died..
I for one can vouch the Camry being a tank. The car that ran into me was a 2006 Highlander going about 35-45 mph. No skid marks so just an estimate on speed. just a link to refresh everybody. Sad that people had to die in this case. Unlike my accident

If the outside of the car is tougher and doesn't crumple in an accident, the occupants are more likely to be injured. The entire front and rear ends are called crumple zones and are designed to do exactly that in an accident to protect those inside.
I'm guessing that the couple that died wern't wearing seat belts.
Well, I wouldn't say it's built like a "tank". I have noticed from TN member's accident reports that the car's crumple zones are effective, though and that's a darn good thing. Anyone driving off the shoulder, then overcorrecting to make a 90 degree turn on the highway would no longer be driving at highway speeds by the time he hit the Lumina. My GUESS is that he probably hit the lumina while he was at 10-20mph max. He probably hit the rear side of the Lumina or the Lumina driver when hit over compensated in some way before the roll. Either it probably wouldn't have taken much to roll the Lumina. I'm only guessing, and maybe I'm way off base. Anyway, I feel really bad for that 4 month old. The infant will never knows it's parents, just because of some random unforseen occurrence. It made me go hug my little ones!
Yikes...those are the types of accidents I always fear...something stupid happening at highway speeds.
I feel for the infant as well, but in a way you can say at least it's an infant...it's just going to be a different life for that kid, not a hugely life changing traumatic incident. Imagine if the kid was 6...

Sucks seein' that Camry in the accident...especially 'cause it's the same color (Desert Sand Mica) as my car...ugh...that poor little baby...hope she finds a good home...and condolences to the family in the Lumina...that stretch of highway in Jersey is just tough...
