Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
the sooner the better, i concur with desentrix opinion - 1000 miles is not too soon to change it on a new engine.
I change mine every 2,000 - 3,000 miles, i think 5,000 is too long for dino oil because i believe its well on its way to breaking down at that point.
There's really no such thing as "break-in oil" any more, so you're probably best off waiting for the first scheduled maintenance.
Thats what I heard as well, they use traditional oil so it would be fine until 5K miles. I didnt change my oil until about 4800 miles, although I checked it quite often to make sure it wasnt abnormally dark or low.
On my Elantra I'll be doing the same thing I do when I buy an old car. Change it at 3000, get it on my hands so I can see what color it is, and if it looks practically new then go til 4000 next time.

You don't really have to do anything but the normal maintenance schedule. Personally, I think it's beneficial to do the first oil change in 500-1,000 miles. I would then do the regular 5,000 miles services starting when you hit 5,000 miles.
Remember to use the proper oil. If you do a search you can find the thread that shows oils to use and not use.

I understand there is no break in oil, However, I have always changed my new vehicle's oil at @ 500 miles and switched to Mobil 1 full synthetic. I will continue to use this formula. Thanks to all for for the feedback.
On another note anyone else have an '08? Or am I a plankowner?

Because my 5,000 mile service was free. I drove the car with the fresh oil for 1,000 miles and then changed to Mobil 1. That service was free too but not the oil, I brought my own.
I'm not sure why I only drove it for another 1,000 miles before I changed to Mobil 1. You don't have to. I guess I just wanted the engine to be be extra clean for the switch.
Many dealers hand out those '3 free oil change' keychain tags. If you're going to switch to synthetic, you might as well use up those 3 anyway.
Furthermore, changing oil every 3k is a waste considering the quality of oil, filters, and/or additives have improved from the past.
I disagree. Some cars will use that oil up in that amount of time, some won't. My '94 Corolla's oil comes out clean after 5k. The '89 Celica looks used at 4k.
