5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
What RPM does the 3.5 run at 70 and 80 mph? I am trying to select tires and wheels before my Camry arrives and need the rpm's to figure out how much it will affect gearing.
BTW- I am trying to decide between a 215/55/17 and a 225/50/17. I really like the Pirelli PZeroNero M+S, I've had three sets on different cars, and the closest size I can find is the 225/50; there isn't much in the 215/55 I like.
edit: I accidentally put Gen5 in my original title.

So you're going to change the gearing?
All you really need is the overall tire diameter. Use the Tire Rack website to pick an appropriate sized tire and/or wheel.
No, but using a smaller diameter tire will affect gearing; causing the engine to run a (very slightly) higher RPM at the same speed as the stock size.
Here's the formula
(Original Tire Diameter / New Tire Diameter) X RPM@MPH = New RPM @ actual MPH
are you recalibrating your speedometer?
This is a good question for Gen 5's too (at least for me) -- at 80 I run at 3kRPM. My old 95 I4 runs around the same 3k RPM at 80 too. I thought it would be lower RPMs just because it was a V6.
Any one know why by any chance?
yes yes I know /derailed (slightly)

I'm not going to recalibrate the speedo, it will only be off .5-.75 mph with a 225/50/17. I am just trying to find out how much higher rpm's will be at hwy speeds due to the slightly smaller tire diameter. It's going to be in the 20-30 rpm range. I'm pretty set on a 225/50, I just wanted to get an accurate number.
~30 rpm would have a negligible effect on mpg's and performance, correct?
Thanks Reprod. I know there are many other factors, but what's your hwy mpg's?
I've never looked into my highway MPG because I have an SE and we dont get that nice in dash comp the XLE's get. Not to mention I go back and forth between city driving and highway driving. Sorry I cant help out more.

I think you wont have any effect at all, speedo will be almost identical too

Thanks for the input. I ordered Enkei RP-F1's and Pirelli PZeroNero M+S 225/50/17 saturday. The difference is only 1.1% and I don't think it will matter.
I'll drive on stock springs until (if) they come out with a Gen6 sway bar then I'll give the suspension some attention.
