How far past E does the gauge go before you are actually empty?
Yesterday when I left for work I had was about 2 bars away from E and the fuel light was on. I work in downtown cleveland and so I have to deal gridlcok and what not and after work I went to the Gym and and after that I went to get gas, by the time I got to the gas station the gauge was past the last bar. However when I filled up the car only took in 15 gallans meaning that I still had 3 gallons left if I am correct that the car holds 18.5 gallons. So has anyone let their camry get just about empty before filling it up? and if so how far past the last bar is it when your car is actually empty?

wasnt this topic a Seinfeld episode? I just get gas when im at a quarter tank. If you run the tank dry there's a good chance you are going to burn up the fuel pump (the gas cools it) and then you get to replace that - have you priced fuel pumps lately? I just get gas and not drive around on E like some dumb blonde lol
On my '05 Camry and my '07 ES350 (haven't tried it on my '07 Camry yet) I've driven to the point where the guage goes below the "E" and the "Approx. Range" reported on my info display showed I had about 5 and 8 miles (respectively) left to go. When I filled up, it was only about ~16gal.

I'm actually at that point right now. I decided to drive 30 miles to work this morning and I'm already below the last line on the "E". I've driven about 455 miles once pulling into the parking lot. I figure I'll put about 16.5 gal in the tank, the most I've ever put in was 17.1. The manufacturer should add "usable" tank capacity to the specifications for the vehicle and not just the actual volume, because you can't use every last bit of gas in the tank or like marc780 said, there a 'chance' you could burn up the fuel pump. I don't think if you run out of gas just once that you'll do any damage, but if you're someone who does it regularly then damage will occur.

I don't let mine go passed 1/4 tank (usually). Esspecially in the winter. More or less for more weight in the back for better traction. But also so no condensation builds up in the gas tank.

Filling up at 1/4 of a tank is for women. Real men drive til its on fumes!
I run my car to empty every time! Filling up at 1/4 is for paranoid people.
Besides, there is nothing wrong with pushing a car once it dies. Some people in North America find that very disturbing and they call the CAA or AAA. That is being a wuss.
The correct way is to start pushing the car to the nearest gas station. In Europe you can see that all the time. No cops harass you for blocking the road, and nobody laughs. It's a normal thing that happens to any car.

i made a trip from nyc, to baltimore for 2 days, and back up to nyc on one tank.. just about 500 miles.. i was on E for the longest time in traffic(for you locals, the BQE) and when i filled up the tank, it took 18 gallons!!
i got bored so i filled a gallon of gas into a container and drove on E. Did this on regular street and hwy, well a pretty remote road to resemble hwy driving.
Street scenario:
You'll probably get about 5-10mi depending how bad the stop n go is. Going an avg speed of 45-50mph on a 45mph road.
Hwy scenario:
Avg speed @60-65mph. you'll get at least 10-15mi.
This was done on a cool evening about 75deg. This is just a reference and not guaranteed haha.
