Its interesting to see how many owners are not aware of the need to properly torque their wheels. It is criminal that many shops still use the impact wrench without the torque sticks. Make sure you demand they use the correct one. One shop I used , mentioned that they used the 80 lbs stick. Since there was only a 3 lbs difference from what is recommended I gave the go ahead. The sticks come in different colors and go up in 5 lb increments. Just make sure you verify everything. When they realize you up on all this torque stuff they will not pull any easy, fast ones. All this is so educational and serves to keep us save!! Happy motoring you all!

so whats the torque ibs setting ?

So, for the 2007 Camrys (mind V6 XLE) what is the stud size, I see a variance for torque settings.

70-80ibs ? is a range.

or just 80ibs ?

I just recently bought a torque wrench was on sale for $40 Can., torqued my snow rims with 80ibs.

The Tirerack's technician on this forum Tires and Wheels told me it's 77.
I have been using 80 just for easy to remember. So you are fine.

What is ibs? Some Canadian thing??

76 ft.lbs (1,050 kg.cm) is the recommended torque no matter what your engine size.

Not ibs, it is Ft-lbs ( foot pounds) or Metric Nm (Newton Meters)

77 is a good torque for all OEM wheels, the Alloy OEM nuts have a cone seat and washer.

Otherwise most alloy wheels are around 65 to 69 Ft Lbs, and steel wheels, 90 Ft Lbs.

Not true at all, just another incorrect post.

Some vehicles require more than 100 ft/lbs. Not all OEM nuts have a cone seat and washer either.

Torque specifications should be checked for each vehicle.

^ he speaks the truth -- though for my car, I use the manual specifications + 5 ft/lbs so it comes out to around 83-85 ft/lbs

remember, star pattern + go back to the 1st nut at the end to ensure it's completely snug!

me bad, thats cool that you caught my spelling error Njerald, I knew you would. After posting two web sites of reference you still think ibs is not lbs ? wow, you're very picky. As for "some Canadian thing" I'm not sure where thats going, but I'll leave that one alone.

i usually dont bother, i have an electric impact wrench and it seems to torque the aluminum wheels about right - no wobbles or cracks in the wheels - its a lot of trouble cause i take the wheels off and on alot to check brakes etc.
If you torque the wheels you are torquing 20 times and if the wheels are about as tight as they are supposed to be its enough - not too tight or too loose.

I change wheels at work every day and imagine if i had to torque every single lug nut? We have the torque sticks but i usually dont bother using them. Even if you have an impact wrench many of them have adjustable settings so you set it one or two clicks down from tightest and just blip it on. No wheels fell off yet and ive done a thousand or two.
