Has anybody seen this message when starting your engines before? I keep getting it every time I start my car. I got my first oil change done at 5000k and so far I got 9200k on it. I wonder what's going on.

it comes on to let you know that your oil should be changed soon.. i believe it comes on every 5k.. check in your manual, it will tell you how to reset it.. mine is currently on right now but i dont remember off hand how to turn it off.. i believe with the key in the ignition, hold down the odometer button, turn the ignition on and the odo will flash dashes "------"
u can also do a search on the forum.. i know for a fact its been discussed and posted how to reset it
Here you go.
to reset the MAINT REQD light so it will quit blinking:
a) With the Engine ON click your Odometer/TripA/TripB selector knob so
the display shows TRIP A
b) Turn the car off
c) Turn the key 1 click to ACC (accessory mode)
d) While in ACC, press and hold the selector knob in (don't worry that
can't see anything on the dashboard.)
e) While you are still holding the selector knob, click the key 1 more
position to the ON position. Hold the knob for about 5 seconds.
f) If you do it correctly, you will see the TripA display change to some
numbers and then start blinking quickly. you will also see the MAINT
REQD blinking quickly.
Start the car up, and no more MAINT REQD light until you put another 4500miles on the car!

The light starts coming on at startup when you get close to the mileage for service. It will come on solid and stay on when 5,000 miles have elapsed since the last time it was reset.
I guess it's a cool feature, but like the TPMS system now people will rely on the car telling them when to get an oil change, instead of recording the mileage.

I guess I'm missing something - the maint light tracks your milage (every 4500 miles it starts blinking, then at 5000 miles it comes on solid).
My old Scion, and my wifes current Scion do this too, and I've always used it as a mark of when to call to schedule a service.
But then again, I put 600 miles a week on my Camry, so I'm always getting it serviced!

thats why Toyota advises people to stick to the maintenance schedule and change oil @ 5K increments. There are some people who don't even know that a car requires oil changes.

Yes thats correct, but when people start to rely on the car telling them when it's time, then if something malfunctions, or for instance say the bulb burns out, they may think everything is fine until their car dies.
