Gen6 can my back brakes be done already

I have app 35k and wondering if my rear pads are done prematurely.

I have heard them making noise for the longest time and told the dealer the TSB on the rear brakes. They mentioned after looking that the brakes in the rear are done.

Could this be due to the brakes rubbing due to the TSB and prematurely wear the pads.

btw this is a 07 se v6

This all could be true, but pads are pretty cheap in the grand scheme of things and it's something any shade tree mechanic (that's you) can do in pretty short order.

Gen6

Depends on the relative hardness of the front/rear pads and the way the front/rear brake proportioning is set up on the Gen6.

On other cars, my rears have lasted almost twice as long as the fronts. I'll know in a year about my Camry as I have 21,000 miles on it now.

aye~ disc brakes are cake to replace even without the right tools --in comparison to drum brakes.

Tell the dealer that the wear is premature and that you have been hearing noises from them. Be polite but firm. If they are hesitant, tell them to inspect the fronts so they can see that you arn't abusing the brakes.

The brakes may be proportioned to the rear more than the average car. I just did the rears on my Mazda3 at 50k. The fronts aren't even halfway gone.

this is strange....i have 51k on my camry and my back brakes show next to no wear at all, and ive never done anything with them
my fronts were resurfaced twice and the pads changed out once....

the backs should not wear nearly as quick as the front, as the car does the majority of its braking force with the front brakes, and the backs just are there for assistance....id check with your dealer as you are still under warrenty and it should be taken care of propmptly

Check out this thread over at GreenHybrid from a hybrid owner:
http://www.greenhybrid.com/discuss/f...ke-wear-15568/

Sounds like you have the same problem. His car the the first that I heard about this, but to read about two people having the same problem is a little disturbing. FYI, my brake pads are wearing evenly after 30k, at least that's what my service rep tells me.

If the TSB you are referring to is BR-01006 about the squealing, this is only to replace the shim kit and reduce high pitched vibration during light application resulting in squealing. This wouldn't have anything to do with brake wear.
As far as warranty work, barring a problem with a sticking caliper, I would be surprised if you got any coverage. I've seen people replace brake pads every 10k miles, and I've seen people replace brake pads every 100k miles. It all depends on how you use them (and of course, everyone says that they are 'very easy' on them), and as long as the wear is fairly even from side to side, it's usually not indicative of a problem.

The above post is correct. The TSB is only for shim kits, which have to do with noise. Shim kits have nothing to do with wear. The trend in brakes that I see now is smaller pads in the rear of the car. Many engineering ques in these new cars have to do with weight and friction. Smaller pads in the rear create less friction when they are not "on" and less weight. Being smaller they will wear faster than we are accustomed to on older cars. Keep in mind also that if you live in any of the "salt belt" that the rear disc brakes have a tendency to "stick" due to rust build up on the sliders of the calipers. This will also make the brakes wear a little quicker than normal. Getting pads warrantied will be next to impossible because they are considered a wear item. The hassle that you will have to go through to get them covered is simply not worth the $50 is costs to replace them ($100 if you have someone install them for you.)

Whil I agree with the two above posts that brake pads are a wear and tear item, and thus not covered by warranty, that is not the issue. The question is why the front pads would be at 90% while the rear pads are at 10% (I think those are the percentages described by the hybrid owner I mentioned before). Even if he rides his brakes constantly and thus has premature wear, the pads should wear evenly. The huge discrepancy in front/rear wear is indicative of a mechanical problem, at least IMHO.

Yes, it could be. But the question the OP had was whether or not rear pad replacement at 35k is premature. He never made any mention that the front pads had 90% remaining and never indicated a 'huge discrepency', nor did he indicate if he has serviced his front brakes yet. I've seen plenty of vehicles needing rear pads around 30k miles, it all depends on how they're used.

My friend is a service writer for Norwalk Toyota. She told me that there have been a number of 07 camrys come in with premature pad wear for the rears. She wanted me to take my car in at 1000 miles to have them looked at.
