Gen5 Wheels balanced correctly?

I had Pep Boys swap my 17's for a another set, just used the same tires. They supposedly balanced my new wheels, they charged me for it.

The new wheels are on my car now, and I looked closely at them, especially inside the rim. I don't see any counterweights. Should I be concerned?

Is it possible that the wheels are already balanced w/o having to use counterweights? Or did Pep Boys rip me off by not doing the work?

How will the ride be if not properly balanced? I think my ride is more wobbly at the sterring wheel, especially on the freeway. Or maybe its psycholocigal because I think the work wasnt' done.

Please give me any input to help ease my mind. Thanks, guys...

Surely to goodness you can drive the car down the road and tell if the wheels are balanced or not. Just drive the darned thing. If there is anything wrong you will feel and hear it.

Yes it is possible that they required little or no counter weighing but they might also have weights on the inside and not on the outside. Just test drive it.

They may have static balanced the wheels with stick on wheel weights which would be the reason there are not weights on the wheel lip.

As stated above, drive the vehicle. You should be able to feel if the tires/wheels are out of balance by getting a vibration at or near highway speeds.

They also try to hide the stick on weights behind any spokes on the wheel.

I had got 2 new yoko's avid v4s tires installed at discount tire. The two that were in the front originally had 50% treat.

SO I just asked them to move those to the rear and and put the new tires in the front.

Now feel vibration at close to 80 mph. It certainly seems to be from the front wheels where the new tires were put.

Can I ask them to balance it again?. (they have lifetime balance). Is there like a print out the balance machines give to show that balancing results?

The discount tire guys asked me if I want the other two wheels (that had the older tires) balanced. I said NO, just move them to the back (since there was absolutely no vibration before wheb they where in the front).

ok, so i took off 1 wheel, and i found that Pep Boys put the counterweight on the inside of the rim, hidden. i'm assuming the balanced the rest.

but im still having vibrations between 60-70 mph. again, Pep Boys did the balancing.

shall I go to my local tires/wheels place to have them redone? thats where I usually go for tire/wheel stuff and they do great work. or am i just imagining the vibrations?

About as easy as you'd imagine. I'd think twice about using jb weld on the wheel weights, let alone that little bit of sticky stuff on the weight that looks like it came from a post-it note.

Stick on weights are a compromise just for appearance - obviously. One drawback of after market wheels. What can you do, glue them on? I dont really know of the solution if you want to keep your wheels unmarred by weights.

No they are not balanced at the factory, because the wheel comes all by itself from the maker. And tire and wheel must be balanced together, tire installed - and they cant possibly know by how much the tire is going to throw the wheel off balance.

Gen5 Problem solved!

so I went to my trusted wheels/tires show earlier today. they said the tires were balanced okay, but each wheel needed a hub ring. its a plastic ring that goes inside the wheel if there's too much space.

my wobbling at 60-70 mph was due to too much wheel movement from the extra space.

but they balanced them 4 me again anyways too make sure.

everything costed under $11!!!

problem solved.

I'm glad it was that simple.

So apparently it wasn't done properly the first time. If the wheels don't fit the hubs properly, the hub ring/adapter was needed from the start.

That was an extremely cheap lesson.
