5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I need some accurate information for a stereo upgrade. I bought a 2007 Camry LE 4 cyl that is a base car. The stereo leaves a lttle to be desired compared to what I had been listening to. I like the appearance of the factory stereo but need a cost effective way of upgrading. With that being said, will it be a plug and play situation if I purchase the upgraded sound system from a higher end camry/avalon. Or should I look into the aftermarket for the best cost effective upgrade? Thanks in advance for your responses...
Easiest thing to do is replace the stock speakers with some quality aftermarket speakers. Maybe get a 4 channel amplifier as well. That way it appears stock, but sounds much better. The headunit itself has little to do with the way it sounds.

That exactly what I did. I replaced all four 6x9 stock with JBL speakers and a JL amp under the passenger seat. It sounds so much better. I sat inside my friend Camry that has a JBL system. It sound the same as mine.

I swear if you could ONLY post informative AND/OR positive comments some people on here would have 1 post, because they would not be able to refer someone to use search option..I say if you don't have anything nice to say don't say nothing. My $0.02.
As far as stereo goes, I say get a "12 L7 solobaric with mono d rated amp 800W RMS at 2 Ohm and some 250W 4 channel amp with some polk audio mids you'll be set. $450-$600 depending on your bargain skill. Use Ebay or Craiglist both are straight.

you were able to get the rear speakers to fit without the magnets hitting the trunk rod?
i'd upgrade to JBL componets....its a great system and im sure youll like it better
as for headunits, they make a dash kit for gen 6 and u can choose th headunit to suit you

At first it was hitting the trunk rod. I brought it back and the guy kinda bent the rod just enough to made it not rubbing anymore. And yes, the trunk open and close just fine.

Is that safe to do? Or you just don't care?

its safe, the metal rods you refer to are actually the tension springs to hold open the trunk. If you just tweak them a little bit you should be fine. If you bend them too much, the trunk may not hold itself open as high, or someother adverse effect like that. But it should still close and latch securly without messing up the gaps in your body.

Exactly, as long as the trunk still open and close without rubbing the speaker...that's all I care.

I have a 07 SE with the non-JBL stock radio. A friend upgraded his JBL to NAV and gave me his head unit -- but kept the amp and speakers.
Based on what I saw on the JBL - Toyota page I was planning on buying an amp and replacing the speakers & wiring, but I was told today at Sound Advice that I would have to purchase the JBL amp that originally came with the head unit for it to work in my car.
Does anyone know if there's a way around this because I saw the amp on sale at Wilde Toyota Parts for $655 - that seems a little high (yeah I know I got the head-unit for free) but I think I might be missing out on something here.

You're going to need some wiring from the headunit to the amp, power to the amp and the amp to all the speakers also. and tear out 50% of the interior.
actually changing the headunit makes a noticable difference depending on what kind you get. at least thats what ive noticed on my accord. but anyways quick question is there a DIY on speaker replacement for the 6th gen or can someone at least tell me how to get to the speakers? i kind of have an idea but i like to make sure and get my facts straight before i perform an operation on my car
