5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
So My tranny slips right, no big deal it happens every week or two, jumps 1200 rpm between 3rd and 4th I am riding that out until this winter so it's highly repeatable in the cold and don't have to deal with any dealer BS that they cant reproduce a well known problem that the car definitely has. Also quite frankly I don't want to be a guinea pig and want to give the regular brain surgeons at Toyota enough time to figure out how to actually fix the problem since they have issued about 10 "fixes" to date with little to no success. By the winter their crack engineering staff will have had, oh say, a year and a half or so to figure this one out which is roughly the amount of time it would take a newborn sloth to solve the same problem. A true enigma for them; someone please revoke their engineering degrees.
All ranting aside that's not my issue. I'm driving home yesterday and the car started to shudder (not a slip) between 1st and 2nd under extremely light load and now does it every time. Or at least I perceive it to shudder, it's a real light shudder/rumble under light acceleration. It's perhaps .5 seconds in duration between 1 and 2 at a shift point of about 1400-1600 RPM. Can anyone with a V6 try this for me and confirm that the shift between 1-2 is buttery smooth in their car (or not)?
If this is not normal I'll probably throw abandon to the wind on Theory #1 above and just report it on my next oil change.

My trans is just fine,no flare and does not shudder. Sorry I can't help.
Although, my flare is no where near as bad as yours (200-300). I've become accustomed to it and it happens so rarely that it really has become normal operation.

Mine operates the same way. It has been several weeks since last flare..
Mistabullet: you secretly love the 6 speed?..is'nt it more like a love-hate relationship?

I had my transmission replaced and it still flares. Now my check engine light is coming on. I tightened the gas cap to make sure that's not the problem. I guess I said all of that to say - I had the tranny repaired - now my check engine light is coming on. Anybody have any ideas?
An update on this. The dealer re-flashed my transmission and sent me back out into the world, the reflash does fix the cold start flare but does not stop flare entirely. It seems the flare occurs at other more obscure times and places in the power curve and occured even when the vehicle was warm. So the condition does become far more difficult to duplicate after the flash. My reccomendation is not to get the flash update, in my vehicle I considered the behavior of the transmission to be better before the update than after the update but it's a personal choice thing.
What is interesting is that the update did not solve the 1st to 2nd low speed low acceleration "clutch chatter" at about 12mph. At first the dealer told me they could not duplicate it (hard to imagine because it happens every shift) so I asked them to haul over a 2008 V6 and I'd swing by and demonstrate the difference. Turns out I never had to go, they produced a TSB(don't know which one) and ordered a new transmission for me.
At least they are doing the right thing, which makes me far happier than I was before, perhaps this car will last a while afterall...
My second replacement trans is on order. Had reflash done on the replacement. Didn't work. I know Toyota hasn't solved the problem but I keep hoping. They need to change suppliers I think. I love my SE V6, thats the only reason I put up with this crap.

The same exact issue is happenning with my '07 V6 LE - a shuddering at ~10-12 mph. I brought it to my dealer for repair about two weeks ago - they performed some sort of reflash (reset a driver? I'd have to check my service receipt to comfirm), but the issue persists. This is in addition to the 3rd-to-4th shifting flare, as well as numerous tranny jumps/skips/lurches - I've brought it in for tranny-related issues about six times now, already. I have another service appointment tomorrow, so fingers crossed they actually do something this time.....
