5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I know i should know better, but i walked into my my local deal to get some pricing on 18 trd wheels. they were 299 each, i found a spot on the net for 195 each. Anyhow, the parts guy was saying i should only use toyota wheels because i may damages this or that (insert jargon). I know as long as i get the proper measurements i should not worry. What do u guys think? I am torn between the TRD wheels and konigs crosshair?
Should i go for the TRDs to be safe?
Any other issues i should worry about?
Now that i think about it i remember the dealer i bought from had konig wheels.
That guy does make some sense, and probably only expressed his point of view. He isn't being that realistic though.
Many people buy aftermarket rims and then have to get spacers/adapters/rings etc. just to get the car to drive right again. The dealer deals with all sorts of complaints that end up being caused by aftermarket wheels. That's probably what the dealer person was getting at.
Getting wheels that fit your car properly is the best way to go. Make sure that EVERYTHING fits properly and you'll be fine.
agree w/ TRD, it is important to make sure the rim is a perfect fit, you may need hubcentric rims for generic rims that are universal, also, make sure the offset is correct

Are all this information (offset, etc.) found on the rims? I just bought a set of 19" TSW Thruxton that was originally on an 04 G35 sedan. I figured both cars use 5x114.3 bolt pattern, and that's all i wanted to make sure. Now that you guys mention all these other things, I'm scared I might not be able to use them after all.

YOu will need to check offsets, should be fine though, for sure you will need to get hubcentric rings, these are cheap

+1. My car has been at the dealer for 3 days and they want to keep it until tomorow to try and solve a slight shimmy at 60 to 65 mph. I bought the car new with 20" wheels installed. I have heard the Toyota/Lexus are very sensitive to trouble with aftermarket rims.

Do you have wheel locks on your wheels? This caused a shimmy for me when I had my TRD wheels. Now I have Rays lugs and I have no problem at all.

Over the last 3 days they have performed 4 wheel alignment twice, road force balanced 4 times, indexed the tires to the rims, replaced the lug nuts, checked the balance of the tires across 4 different balance machines. Hubcentric rings are installed too. They called me this morning to let me know that they will be trying a new type of wheel weights that are plastic casings filled with small metal shot to replace the stick on weights. The mfg of the weights are comming personally to oversee the installation and road test.
theres these 18 trd wheels on ebay for 499 used you should check em out as far as tires what ever fits the wheels that guy is a freaking idiot!
wait a minute, a toyota salesguy saying that trd wheels are made specifically for toyota cars is an idiot? a toyota salesguy trying to sell trd wheels is an idiot? you are correct, he is an idiot trying to sell his company's product. what an asshat.....
I'm in the process of getting a used 2007 Camry with the 18" TRD wheels, and while I love the look of aftermarket wheels I would much rather have the ride quality of 18". I don't think it would matter whether or not the wheels were TRD, Toyota, or whatever. As long as the offset, tire size etc fit perfectly, then I would say go with whatever you're comfortable with.

^^^ The TRDs are nice. They are just a pain to clean. I was selling mine but then I decided to hold onto them because I may not be keeping the Cam and i dont want to trade the Cam in with these wheels because they wont know the proper value of them.
The TRDs give a nice ride... not too rough at all. I just wish they were wider. 18x8.5 or 18x8.
