so i crunched some numbers, true

price diff between i4 and v6.

Assumptions:

10 yrs of ownership
150,000 total miles
$2.60 per gallon of fuel.
Regular maintenance expenses the same for both cars.
Necessary repair expenses the same for both cars.
Both cars LEs. One V6 the other one I4.
Insurance rates the same for both cars.

Ave gas mileage obtained from:
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/

I4 = 26 m/g V6= 22 m/g

Retail prices obtained from: toyota.com

I4 = $ 21,075.00 V6= $ 23,640.00

Hence:

I4:
150,000 miles div 26 miles/gallon = 5769 gallons X $2.60/gallon = $14,999.00

V6:
150,000 miles div 22 miles/gallon = 6818 gallons X $2.60/gallon = $17,727.00

Grand total:

I4:
$21,075.00 + $14,999.00 = $ 36,074.00

V6:
$23,640.00 + $17,727.00 = $ 41,363.00

Difference: 41,363 – 36,074 =$ 5,293 / 10 yrs = $ 529 / yr div 12 months = $ 44.00 per month.

So: V6s pay $ 44.00 more a month than the I4s.

+ a couple qts. of oil at each oil change for the V6.............

and gas won't be $2.60 a gallon......try 20-40% more.

V6 resale may be $100 more after 10 years.

kudos

Nice job on the calculations.

The other big factor is deprecitation. Does a V6 Camry have better resale % value than a 4?

Good info...

Tires on V6 wear out quicker than I4 due to HP #s

I think V6s are more difficult to service than i4

Making me feel tiny bit better about having 4 cyl=priceless

The MPG values are way off based on everyone's input on here. The V6 seems to be getting much better than what you show and the I4 is apparently below expectations.

Plus, what percentage of people who own a 10 year old car are the original owners? How many keep them 10 years?

The problem with crunching numbers is that you will never get 100% of the accurate picture since a small deviation on your baseline can have an exponentially large affect on your results.

Feeling I get when I see another SE but it only had 1 tail pipe versus my 2 = PRICELESS

good job man, of course not 100% accurate (impossible with fluctuating prices), but definitely the best possible estimate. really puts it into perspective.

Insurance will be more for the V6 than the 4 cylinder.......

Yes I am sure. I am an insurance agent.

............I still wish I got the V6

Fortunately for us V6 owners, we'll be able to get to the bank quicker than you 4 cylinder fellas.

i wouldnt take this assumption of $44 correct.

even though it is an assumption it is in no way correct.

v6 take more oil, use 2 more spark plugs, when serviced if it is serviced by a qualified toyota technician it will cost more as well as breakdowns.

i guess if you want to look at it that way thats cool but in reality numbers are higher.

i also bought a i4 and would of prefered the V6 instead.
this post is not to say that im better off with my i4 because even if it is more expensive to maintan the v6 i belive i should have bought it.

To tell you the truth I had mixed feeling about that!!!
I was thinking what if my house didn't burn but my car inside the garage did.
Oh well, it was just a wishful thinking.

agreed, except the spark plugs- you don't change iridiums often.

therefore, spark plug changes are negligible.
