Shifter modification?

I was thinking back to my old car (88 accord) and I remember how the shifter could be pulled from D4 to D3 without pushing the button. Now I know same thing 4-3 could be done but turning off o/d, but is it possible to mod the shifter so I can pull it from D to 2 without pushing the button? Being able to pull the shifter from N-D-2 would be nice.

whats the diff in just holding the button in? i usually drive with my hand on the shifter anyway and the thumb naturally rests on the button..

edit: and u prob cant do that without also allowing the shifter to go into reverse and park without holding the button also, which is quite dangerous if you ask me(a slip of the hand or a fumble could throw it into reverse at a high speed and then kabloomy!)

Since theres already a lock at neutral, could it be at all possible to keep it and only have it go the other way? Holding the button in creates more of a drag while pulling down (or the illusion of) Haha but I guess I could get used to it..

Get a stick shift, no buttons to press. Just two pedals to play with. Cluth in shift to N, blip gas to match, shift to next lower gear clutch out.

I drove older Hondas before and I don't remember the shifter bing able to go from D to 2 without pressing the button. The shifter would stop once it hit the S position.

Maybe the Prelude was different. It went from D to S3 and then there was a S4 button on the handle that would allow it to go to 4th in S position. I remember the shifter wouldn't go past S without pushing the shifter button though.

I've gotta ask, as I never understood the Honda shifting thing (being able to go switch gears w/o the button).

Why are you even changing gears often enough for this to be an issue?

I currently drive a manual, but I've had autos and have never switched to anything but drive (save for maybe decending a hill). I've driven (not owned) Hondas and thought it was a stupid design I kept putting the car in D3 instead of D.

I like forcing a downshift/engine braking.
