5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I wonder if anybody has converted the car to be used natural gas? If it does, how much is the cost?
I ask this question because I have seen many companies have converted their lift trucks to use natural gas instead of propane, it's cheaper and safer.
TIA
Propane is a gas, just like natural gas. Gasoline is a liquid, I just dont see how someone can just "convert" their car to run on a gas.
Its actually very simple, and not very expensive at all. You can even set it up as "Dual Fuel" to run on Either gasoline, and with the flip of a switch run on CNG.

I've heard of diesels being converted, but never a gasoline-powered car..

Yea I know an old thread, yell and scream if you want but, I just saw were it appears that there are going to be tax credits to convert your car/truck to use gas & cng or propane. The kit auto switches back & forth between petrol and CNG depending on the power needed. I have checked serveral vendors and the kits are around $1500 and the reinforced cng tank is around $1500. The CNG tank can be filled @ your house if you have gas service.
Does anyone think that they might consider the conversion? This is part of T Boone Pickens plan to reduce the amount of imported oil we use.

W95C, actually it's good to bring back old threads, instead of posting new useless threads that has been covered again, and again, and again...
It shows us that you've mastered the search function.
Oh, I have never been "Search Disfunctional", it is just that the search section really needs to be purged.
Anyway, back on topic, would you consider a CNG conversion?

You also need a big tank in the car to carry the CNG. My previous employer had a fleet of dual fuel, CNG and gasoline, passenger cars but no where to fill it. I didn't like that the CNG tanks took up half the trunk. On the trucks, the tank took2-3 ft of the 8 ft bed. There's a big warning sticker that says not to put anything on top of or step on the CNG tank.
I didn't like them mostly because the CNG installation was an after thought on these vehicles and took up a lot of space. Seriously...what good is a Chevy 2500HD 4x4 when your bed is only 5 ft long and you have to worry about damaging the CNG tank that's exposed in the bed. Trucks are meant for work and they will get the shit beat out of them in the process, there's no way around it.
If the tank didn't take up so much space, I might consider switching to CNG, but considering the space they need...i'm not sure I would.
LPG (propane) is super common in Aus, virtually the entire taxi fleet run it as well as many passenger cars. There's a factory dedicated LPG car as well as manufacturer approved conversions.
The tank issue can be solved by using toroidal "doughnut" tanks that fit in the spare wheel well on passenger cars. Most commercial ute/ van/ truck conversions here have the tank mounted under the car so as not to intrude on the luggagee compartment.
CNG is a bit of a strange one. Much of the bus fleet here in Perth run CNG, but it's not available to the public. There were some test vehicles around but who knows what's happened to them.
Several times already I was driving on the highway road and got a really bad smell. I'm sure it wasn't the environment in that area cause I kept driving and the smell kept going.. too far to be relate to the area. Not human made kind of bad smell. And it was the same bad smell in several highway areas.
Anyway, is there a car fuel that create/cause a really really stinky smell even outdoor? (asking cause I am not 100% sure)
If more cars use this fuel I will be driving with Oxygen tank. AC + closed vent won't do.

Ast, I hadn't thought about putting a tank in the spare tire wheel well, but that sounds like a good place to mount it. The proposed concept here in the US is to install home fueling stations if you have CNG, which I do. I just wonder how the government will get road tax out of us.
