PAC SWI-JACK Review

Hey guys i just installed my PAC SWI-JACK in my car today. For those of you who dont know what this is, it is a steering wheel control interface made specifically for JVC, Alpine, Clarion, and Kenwood units. i have a Kenwood Excelon DDX 8017 double din unit.

The install itself was quite easy. The unit has about 10-12 wires but you only use a few. For Toyota's, it is as simple as +12v switched wire, ground, and the interface wire(white) that is wired in series with a 150 ohm resistor.

Before i got out into the car, i prepped the SWI-JACK unit. I coiled up all the unnecessary wires, stripped the +12v switched, ground and input wire going to the kenwood unit, along with soldering the resistor to the white interface wire-This was run off another wire tapped into the white interface wire.

I took it outside and i took longer than expected because silly me miswired a few things. Basically, i just tapped into my already existing +12v switched and ground. You have to find the 20 pin harness for the steering wheel controls. This is easy as there is only one 20 pin connector and it has only 3 wires connected to it(the three wires you have to tap into).

Once you find that harness, tap into each wire: pin 6 gets grounded(just run an extra wire to the pre-existing ground), pin 7 is wired directly to the white interface wire, and pin 8 is connected to the white interface wire with the resistor in series. On the other side of the unit, there are 2 wires coming out. One is a plug(for those aftermarket units that have a port that you can directly plug into) and a blue/yellow striped wire. All you do is connect this to your steering wheel control wire from the headunit.

Tada! All the wiring that is necessary is done! On to programming this thing:

The reason i took so long is because i miswired a few things. I accidentally wired pin 6 to the white interface with the resistor, and pin 8 to ground. I also accidentally wired the blue/yellow wire to the headunits blue/white wire by accident(stupid lighting lol) I had to call up PAC to notice my own mistakes lol.

Back to programming:

The instructions make it more difficult than it really is. Simply put, set the radio knob on the unit to the corresponding headunit that you have. There are only 5 choices so you really cant go wrong. Secondly, it is a series of turn ignition on/off, pushing the program button, and pushing the steering wheel controls:

In my case, I wanted to assign 5 buttons. The directions show 8 or 9 different commands. I wanted vol up, vol down, track left, track right, and source. You have to program the unit in the order they show. For me, vol up and vol down were commands 1 and 2, respectively. command 3 was mute, which i do not have, so to skip it, you simply press and hold and the release the program button on the unit. The unit will notify you that it has learned the command by showing a steady LED. I continued on to track right and track left, which were commands 4 and 5, respectively. command 6 was something else i did not use so again i skipped that by pressing the program button. command 7 was source which i have, so i set that up also. Note: When programming, you have to do this within 7 seconds between each other or the unit will think you are done programming and will save your settings, in which case you will have to redo the programming from scratch. I had to do this a few times for i needed a few times to get the hang of the timing.

The only issue i have with this is that the response time of the buttons are not instantaneous, like OEM headunit. You have to hold it for a millisecond or two longer. This is quickly resolved after using it for 20 mins.

Any questions?

MrSo0h0o,

I just picked up the same unit for Pioneer Avic D3 in my Tacoma. I tried programming it today and had some problems. I was able to get the intial program'n done, ignition on press the mode button 8 times, get 8 flashes. But when I try to prog the steering wheel buttons things don't seem to work.

How am I supposed to prog each button? Turn on the ign and press the mode button once for the vol+ and then press the vol+ on the steering wheel? How do I go to the next function?

it automatically does it for you. in the manual, they tell you for each specific unit what the configuration is. ie:1. vol up, 2. vol down, 3. mute.. etc.. once you do the 8 flashes, turn to ignition, let the module tell you what version it is for(vers 8 aka 8 flashes) and then hold the mode button until the light comes on. here is where u have to move quickly. have the manual in front of you. note which commands you do not want to be programmed aka the ones you want to skip.

lets say there are 4 buttons you want to program: #1 is vol up, #2 is vol down, #3 is mute, #4 is track up, and #5 is track down on the manual(just an example). the only ones you want to program is 1, 2, 4, and 5. to program, you press the mode button until the light comes on. release the mode button and press and hold the vol up steering wheel control(which is #1 on the manual). the light will turn off once the button is learned. let go of the SWC button. the light will come back on. within 7 secs, you must press the vol down button or else the unit will save just the first SWC button. so to continue programming, press the next SWC button in the same way you programmed the first button(hold till light omes on, release). If there is a command you want to skip, simply press the mode button on the unit. the light will go out and come back on, letting you know the command was skipped. to continue, make sure you press the next SWC button within 7 secs. once you are done programming, you do not have to do anything else. let the unit be and after 7 secs, the unit will flash 3 times and then flash again your version number.

basically its a timing issue and remembering what you commands you want to skip and what commands you want to use

MrSo0h0o, thanks for the help. I was late last night trying to figure this thing out. I'll try it out today. Thanks again for the quick reply.

I tried to install one of these in my 08 Tacoma with Pioneer AVIC-D3, and this part confused me so much I said to hell with it. There were two different types of resistors with the kit, and neither was labelled. Plus, I didn't know if they were supposed to be shrinkwrapped or what. Wish they offered a plug and play, or better instructions.

In the instruction manual, they tell you what color bands the 150 ohm resistor has. the instructions were actually pretty straightforward. have u worked on a cars electrical system or dealt with electrical components before?(<--- dont take this comment as an attack, im just asking)

Done a novice-amount of car audio installs, but I've never had to wire in my own resistors etc. Just think it could have been made more plug-and-play or at least cut and butt-connect.

When you put the resistor on the wire, did you solder the connections (or if not, how did you finish the connection)? Once the resistor is on, does the resistor need to be shrinkwrapped so it doesn't ground or short out?

yea just solder the resistor to the white wire. then on the other end of the resistor, solder a piece of wire to extend it. you can even just cut the white wire and solder the resistor where you cut it. i didnt heatshrink the resistor, i just wrapped it in electrical tape. the reason for the differing resistors is so that they can make the units more universal. if they made each unit specifically for each make and model, that would be a lot of manual labor. each make and model needs different resistance, plus if you have heating controls on your steering wheel and want to use them also, that requires a different resistance.
