5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
From reading up online, PIAA are brighter and whiter than the slyvania's but i never heard of them till today. Does anyone have them or know anyone whos used their bulbs?
Well i dont like my stock lights, and im tight on cash to get an HID kit so i rather go the cheaper alternative and get 4000k bulbs for a 100.00 vs 400.00 hids which im planing to get later on.
Presumably, you're talking about Silverstars vs. PIAA's.
I've had both -- and I got tired of Silverstars crapping out after six months, so I moved to PIAA's. I don't know if there's that much of a difference in brightness or color temperature (some of that depends upon the model from each brand you buy), but in my experience, I'm getting much longer life out of PIAA's compared to Silverstars.
No, I don't want to even think about going with HID systems, but yes, I do want something other than yellow halogens. PIAA Xtreme Whites do just fine for what I want....
I've used both piaa and silverstars. I had the silverstars in our land cruiser, and it's been over 2 years or so I think, but its not a daily driver, so hours of use are probably low considering it's almost been 2 years. I had the piaa's in an 02 camry for almost a year, and they're still going strong. Both are going to be brighter then standard bulbs, but no where close to hid's. The piaa's seem slightly brighter and are a little more white. The silverstarts seem to get a little more yellow with time, but are still noticiably whiter then stock. The tsx's that were in my gen3 camry and accord are like night and day when you compare it to any non-hid lighting option.
IMHO, save your money and do a retro. If you want the color and don't care about the lighting, then any cheap ebay bulb will get you a few months and are about 1/4 the price of silverstars. Don't waste your money buying "hid-look-a-like" bulbs. You'll be a lot more happy in the long run if you just do a hid retro.
I wish, im in college and barely making my payments on the car. I wish it was summer and i was working full time. I think i'll end up getting the PIAA's extreme whites for now, only 89 bucks, seen them going to 60.
HID kits arent 400 dollars... mine are super bright hids and i got them for 160 installed from this guy. if you want ill give you his number. they arent ebay knock offs either.

+1 I bought the same kit from this guy. My kit has been installed and use everyday for 14 months now. Even use 6 hours straight on a trip then another 6 hours back home. They light doesn't flickering.
I know it's not the brand name like xenondepot selling but for $160 installed. It worth every penny.
All that said, I still going to upgrade to retrofit for a better output.
I can sum it up for this reason:
Stock bulb to HID kit --> 5 times better output
HID kit to Retrofit --> 10 times better output
Don't forget to cover up the squirrel spotters if you gonna go with HID kit.
