Difficulty of Engaging Gear

My 03 2.4 4I are experiencing difficulty shifting from "P" position on the slope. Is it normal?

Define what you mean by difficulty. If you are putting it in park and then setting the emergency brake the car is probably rolling back an inch and putting pressure on the transmission's internal mechanism which sets and holds the gears from moving. Try setting the emergency brake first, let off the stopping brake and then put it in park.

Sounds like he means when he's on a slope, he puts the car in Park, then when he goes to put it in Drive, it is a bit more difficult.

Thats normal, but it's not that good for the park mechanism. Try setting the parking brake, then engaging park.

I agree with the above posts.

setting you parking break is a good habit overall, whether on a hill or even a flat surface. When your car rolls after you put it in park ( provided you haven't used your parking break) you are putting unnecessary strain on the car.

It's good to do, but i've found that in my case, I almost always forget about the brake until I start to drive, so my brake would be worn out in no time

My parents never used theirs, so neither did I, until I learned how important it can be. What I did was stick a posit on my steering wheel that said 'BRAKE'...and after about a week, it became second nature. I also push it all the way down, so even when in drive, it wont go! I had my dad and cousin thinkin my new car was broken.lol.

I use the parking brake in both of my cars. Automatic and manual. That's what it's there for. It's not an "emergency" brake.

it was so used to it when driving the gen5 with the handle when i switched to the gen6 i always forgot about it because it was the pedal type. When even i drive the gen5 now i forget to disengage the ebrake until im down the block.

You couldn't do that with a Gen 6, damn thing starts beeping at me if I try to drive with the parking brake engaged. If I so much as touch that handle when driving, it starts beeping at me too.

Is there a difference in setting the parking brake first then engaging to "P"? I always engage to "P" first and pressing the parking brake.

Yes there is, when you engage park the car will still roll back a ways. The best thing to do is set the parking brake, let the car roll a tad, then engage park.

OK thanks, will try that. Will it eliminate the difficulty of disengage from Parking position to drive position later? My car posh is on the slope. Every morning I have difficulty of pulling the gear lever from "P" and sometimes I hear loud sound from the gear box when I pull it down. However, when the engine hot or rather have been draven before then this will not happen. Will I damage my gear box if I continue to do this?

It might wear some parts out a bit faster, but I think it's minimal wear at most.

Personally, I set the parking brake first and let the car settle. I get it so that the car doesn't move at all most of the time. Then I put the car in gear so that way I use the parking brake to hold the car and the transmission and engine as a backup. I can generally tell if the car has moved at all just by the resistance taking it out of gear to neutral to start.
