From what i've learned, unless you're really slamming it, it wouldn't matter. If you are slamming it, you'd go with k-sport coilovers or air bags. I had my car on factory struts on eibachs 2in fr/1.4in rear -- no pops.
Hell I replaced my factory struts just because they weren't as stiff as GR2's, but even then they are just factory replacements.
Factory's should be fine.
If you trust your friend, go for it -- make sure you have the manuals near by just in case, though it's quite straight forward. Carry a spring compressor with you if you're just doing struts or springs. If you decide to replace both, should be an easy job.

If it's the same friend that's giving you advice, I wouldn't let him put air in my tires.

myth. pure myth.
ive been told this numerous times, but with the camry most people just add the lowering springs, because very few companies make shocks for our cars.....the upside is that all the springs are all specifically designed to work with your stock shocks, and they will lower your car, give you better handling and wont hurt the ride all that much
now to slam the car, youll need the K sport coilovers.....
i dont need to lower my car that much, im not gonna go drifting
