this does work, i had a 04 tacoma with the 3.4L and i didnt go this far but i spent alot of time reading up and i think i remember seeing a dyno proven test. it was funny how the idiots who desined that intake for the V6 tacomas made the opening from the airfilter box to the fender like 2" 3/4 but that lead to a opening to like 1" 1/2 im not sure of the exact measurements but it was around that. when i removed that straw in the fender that connected to my air box it is supposed to give you an additional 7 rwhp and that was dyno proven also. but that poor little truck still had no balls thats why i got my V8 tundra

that's because you have an '04 tacoma. i have an '03 tacoma 3.4L and the deckplate mod would totally help, as well as the remove-the-intake-box-elbow mod. the reason is that the tacoma's engine bay is full of holes where fresh air can circulate (enter and exit), especially around the area where the intake box is.
on the other hand, the gen5/6 camry's engine bay is extremely sealed from fresh air (relatively speaking). the stock/oem intake already draws fresh air from behind the grill. doing the "deckplate" mod will cause the intake to practically bypass the stock piping (due to airflow characteristics and the sizing of the diameter of the intake tract- around 2.5 inch equivalent diameter) and draw hot air loitering in the engine bay near the hood.
in other words- the deckplate mod works for the tacoma very well, but it will do more harm if done in the camry.
