5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
2007 camry I-4 Back from dealer. They checked everything. Could not find any problems, even pulled valve cover to check for sludge.Toyota wants them to do an oil use study. So I paid for them to change oil and filter and will take it in when it is low so that they can document it and tell Toyota.Dealer told me they have not had other new camry's come in for this problem and it is not normal for a new Toyota to use oil until it has well over 100,000 miles.Had dealer reflash computer for tranny shifting problem,it worked great no more shifting back and fourth for no reason. Also had to have them do a front end alignment to fix off center steering wheel. Car was out of alignment per mechanic. All fixed now.I will post another thread when the oil is low and have gone back to dealer. Any advice about oil use is appreciated. Thanks for the TSB calibration it worked great, much better ride.

The dealer is wrong.
It's also clear by your description that they are not properly performing an oil consumption test properly.
It appears as if you received good service. That's a plus for sure.
IMO if you use only 1 quart between changes or similar its nothing to worry about. You didnt say how much oil it used but i bet it isnt much. I've driven cars that used one quart per TANKFUL of gas, i just said the Hell with it and kept adding oil.
You're lucky your dealer cares about customer service, every dealer i've ever dealth with would just give it a "wall job" (park it by the wall) for 3 days and make you come back two or three times and otherwise jerk you around 9 ways to Sunday until the troublesome customer went away. (You already bought the car and they have your money and they make very little or nothing fixing warranty claims). The other stuff seems legit but if it uses a very little bit of oil i say so what, one can be too fussy. "Perfect" is the enemy of "good enough".
And oh wait, heres a convenient post that i happened to click on right after writing this about how most dealers really do things.
Again (as usual), that's incorrect. The dealer polls other dealers in their region and Toyota pays the dealer an acceptable labor rate.
You are correct about the oil consumption though, it's nothing to worry about.
Nonetheless It is fun taking your car into the shop isnt it. Nothing i like better than being f%cked around and wasting all day. And then having them screw it up and having to bring it back a second, third or fortuh time.
By the way your posts are uplifting and a joy to read. Your tact and warmth are truly a marvel and you oguht to run for politics as you know all. Keep up the good work, allow me to heap the highest praise upon you when i say in all sincereity:
TRD knows his shit.....hes got a lengthy background in the auto service industry, and id never hesitate to take his advice on something. esp as the aspiring technician i am.
anyways, i knew the ECM recalibration would take care of the tranny issue....thats very common on the gen 6 4cyls, and is easily fixed by the dealer
+1 for good dealer service
as for the oil usage, i still feel its normal, but keep us posted as to what toyota says.
Car uses 1 quart every 3,000 miles.Service advisor said it is not normal to not go through oil the first 13,000 then to start going through oil after that. When the car has only 19,000 on it.What kind of oil use study are they supposed to do? That is what the factory wants them to do,so the dealer told me.I am not looking for perfection, but I thought that's what toyota's are suppose to be.
No,it's my wifes car and most of the speeds are 55 and below. The only time it's driven hard is when I'm in it and that is not verry often. We have only been on one road trip in the car and that was to the ocean, about three hours each way and I averaged 80-100MPH the whole time. But that was early on when the car didn't use any oil. My only concern or ? is why is it using oil now and not the first 13,000 miles? Most of my wifes trips are about 1/2 hour to work and 1/2 hour home, maybe a stop at the store or the mall. Not alot of city or highway about 50/50

Your Service Advisor isn't speaking for Toyota. He's speaking out of his rear hole.
You believe that Toyota is perfect? That's what you expect?
I'm guessing that your dealer is just trying to brush you off, because you expect perfection...

The dealers are quick buck artists for sure. TRD you are so right. The oil use study was no doubt blowing smoke and would never have been performed, show up and the guy has done a Houdini and cant be found and all the rest are like "who?"
Try some AMSOIL in your ride see if it cures the burn contact me I will fix you up I am a dealer. I can not say it will fix the problem but I use it in old cars and trucks and I get amazing results. I am not hyping the product for a sale I could really carte less, but it works so I got into it for a few bucks on the side and I have the protection for my boat three trucks mowers tractors two old ones that work hard. They all are running fine and use very little oil. I used three quarts of oil in my Ford Van driving from Northern New Mexico to Huston and back then to South Florida and back not bad for a 1993 with 160K on it. The Dodge pickup has 267.000 and has never had the oil changed just filters and top off.windrider@surfglobal.net
I just wanted to ask some advice also..I have a 2007 camry I-4. It used over 1 qt of oil in 3,400 miles. Can't find any leaks. Toyota and dealership told me the same thing. They need to do an oil consumption study. Can't they just do a compression test on the motor to see if any oil is getting through? I'm not a mechanic, but it seems like crap. I've never owned a car that used that much oil. Even my 20 yr old chevy astro van. Would a thicker oil possibly help? Thanks!
