5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
This happens maybe once every few days, but starting about a month ago some times when I start my car it never actually starts, you can hear it cranking but doesn't actually turn over. I'm not sure if it's an electrical problem, because it starts just fine when I try to start it again, and the battery "eye" is green and the voltmeter checks out (about 12.5v after it has sat for a while). It first occurred when I was driving in the rain and going through quite a few puddles, however since then it has done it under ideal conditions as well as in the rain.
I know this isn't really specific enough and there are lots of causes, but I was wondering if anyone else had this issue or know what it may possibly be?
Just a note, I use my car for deliveries so I'm starting my car at least 10-20 times per day. And I'll try to make a video of it, however I never know when it's going to do it or not.

Uh, do you mean you just hear the starter whizzing up, but its not cranking the engine?
Or is the engine actually cranking over, but not starting?

yup i started having that problem like a month ago but its does it only sometimes when i use my remote start and then i put the key in there and all i here is the starter, i doubt its the battery cause my battery is brand new and its pushing 1500 amps

Then perhaps if you two are having the same issue with the starter just whizzing up and not cranking the engine, Then there could be a problem with the starter bendix gear not properly engaging onto the flywheel.

It might be some problem with fuel pump.
My housemates corolla do the same thing. Try to put the key in ignition for few seconds before you crank it. It should start right away.
Toyota has a fix for corolla by reprogramming the computer that controls the pump.

Piece of advice... This is not the forum for questioning anything that could potentially be wrong with your car. This forum is for blindly praising Toyota and their numerous accomplishments in the automotive industry. Kindly refrain from putting anything on the internet that could be detrimental to toyota's untarnished reputation. The fanboys are watching. And reading. They'll find you. Then, when your car completely stops running, (bad engine, I found out today, for those of you keeping score at home. It did comver 15,000 miles, though. Yay, Toyota) you'll be chastised, and told that you're suffering from buyer's remorse, or worse yet, you just can't afford it.
Just a friendly bit of help for you.

You might get a lemon. My solara has the same drivetrain with your camry but I experience 0 problems, I have 32K miles.
With almost 400K camry sold every year, there would be few thousands bad cary made. I agree that camry shold be reliable but thing happen in manufacturing process. My gf mazda 6 (07) is constatly having problems one after another (so far we are at 7th repairs in less than a year) and mazda is not doing anything about it.
I am working in automotive industry (not toyota) and I can say camry and accord still have better design than other cars in the segment.

As far as the topic you mentioned, I think we beat that horse to death already.

The sound is similar to that of when you are trying to start a car with a somewhat drained battery, however the lights don't dim and it continues to make the same noise for several seconds until the key is removed from the start position.

This was my rain reason for asking, I know people can't figure out the problem online since it's hard to describe. I don't use the remote start, but as I said before the car starts up just fine when I try to stat it after the issue.

Hmm, that could be it. It doesnt make the same sound as our old 4Runner which needed a new starter, however I don't believe it's the same thing
