5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My wifes 03 went out at 55K, and its an expensive little sucker. Ive seen 96-2000 ones that failed early (before 60K) and take out the timing belt too though.
True the one at 43K might not cost you, but if they go out on the order of 45 to 50K miles then how many will you put in it in the long run. I have a 98 with 306K (that I just replaced with a 2005 SE) and can tell you that over the long run with that car there were things that just had a shorter life than others. It was part of the regular maintenance cost. Luckily most of my car's issues were low cost. But a WP every 45-50K is a bit expensive when I put 35K miles a year on that sucker. :-) That is a WP every 17 months or less than every year and a half. Thought of another way that woudl be 7 water pumps for me in the time I owned my 98. Does not sound so cheap when I think of it that way, even if the first couple were on Toyota.
Luckily for me I only put in a WP with the 100K TB Change and then Toyota picked up the labor on the 2nd one at 237K when they did the sludge engine rebuild. I paid part only cost on that one.
The cost didnt bother me as much as the down time. Its just an inconvinience having to deal with it unexpectedly at such a low mileage. It has 70K on it now and the annoying rattle noise from the broken baffle inside the intake makes it sound like a weed wacker on acceleration. bahhhhh....

A vast majority of water pumps last waaayyy longer then that. Just because the 1st one was defective doesn't mean they all are. Jeesh, thats what the waranty is for.
sprinkles of pink junk around the top of my engine.
at first i thought maybe the lube place had spilled a little antifreeze when they top it off.
i went ahead an washed the area and the pink junk was gone.
yesterday, during a routine visual inspection of my engine, i noticed that the pink sprinkles are back.
so much for toyota reliability. pump is gone after only 43K miles.
You do realize these things just plain ol' happen to cars all the time. Its just a fluke thing. Don't blame the whole company. my car has 96000 miles and I haven't had to replace a single thing. Cept for the usual, like the belt and stuff.
knock on wood, nothing so far from my 03 with 53k
replaced a waterpump on an 03 with 80k at work today actually now that i think of it....part was like 130 bucks and i intalled it in less than an hour
