Camry Fog Light Burning Hot

I couldn't find a thread with info on this. Has anyone felt their stock camry fog lights on the outer glass cover while they have been on for about 2 minutes? Does it get so hot that you cannot touch them? I really would like to hear if someone else can try this or has tried feeling the temperature of their fog lights. I could not keep my finger on the glass for more than a second after 2+ minutes of them being on. I replaced mine with some h11 55w = 100w bluish bulbs and I would like to hear if someone elses experience with their fog lights since I did not check the temperature before changing mine out. Thanks!

I would test it out for you but I don't have OEM fog light. I only have ebay fog light.
Have you tried put back your stock bulb just for 1 side? That way, you can test a stock bulb and your bluish bulb at the same time. Just a suggestion.

Hey lammydi, thats what I'm gonna do today when i get home from work. I just wanted to see if any of you can feel the temperature with any fog bulbs you have on your car since they all "should" produce similar heat since their the same 55w. If it is ok for them to be that hot. Then I wouldn't worry about driving with them on tonight. If anyone can test the temp. i'd appreciate it.

Should be normal. Your head lamp will be at comparable temperature at the top of the housing.

The fog lamp body, and lens assembly is there to dissipate the heat from your bulb.
Being a small lense and small housing, the temperature will be quite hot.
The only lenses that do not get hot are the ones placed far from the bulb, like the head light, or are otherwise made so that the bulb's heat is carried off someplace else.

I don't get it. They're lightbulbs. Just like the bulbs in your lamps at home, they get hot... How is this even a question?
Just for comparison's sake, I just went and checked the lights on my Aura. After two minutes, the fog light cover is definitely warm, but not hot. Same with the headlights. LED tails, of course are not.

When you have something thats glass and its burning hot and you apply water such as rain to it, the glass could break. This isnt touching the bulb itself, the glass of the fog light enclosure. My headlights just feel warm, but I can't really tell since they have the projector lense on the inside which I can't touch, I'm only touching the outer plastic.

Yeah, I know that. Is the fog light cover glass, though? I don't know. I don't have fogs on the Camry, and besides that, it's still in the shop getting a new engine. I would thnik that the fog covers would be some kind of poly material like the headlights.

Yes, they can be extremely hot.

My Camry gets warm (aftermarket lights) and my Mom's Highlander gets scalding hot.

Bulbs have filaments which get so hot that they glow. That's extremely hot.

I also thought that this was common knowledge.

Light bulbs in your house will get hot also...

I also have a Hyundai Santa Fe with fog lights. The exterior cover is not hot at all. I will have to swap it out with my stock fog's tonight to be on the safe side. I think this heat on the glass is so much that it would melt the plastic pop in covers around the fog light.

Also, has anyone else noticed this. Even though the camry stock headlight and fog are h11 - 55w. The fog bulbs are exactly the same size but are different on the inside. They do not have a small piece of glass, less than a centimeter in length inside the glass of the bulb which the headlights do. And they have 3 holes together in the metal rim right before the glass starts. The lights I bought have this little glass inside the glass of the bulb. I'm noticing most of the headlight bulbs have this little piece of glass and I see it on the lights I put in my fogs.

Does this matter?

SCJROD does have a legitimate concern. Sometimes aftermarket bulbs do run hotter that stock (OEM) bulbs, especially if the have a coating on them (blue, yellow, silver). These bulbs can do damage to your housing if they run hot enough, such as blurring, melting or even cracking the housing/glass.
On my 350Z, I switch the stock turn signal bulb (amber) with silver looking turn signal bulbs. After prolong use, a few months, I did start to notice small cracks near the inside of the housing and slight blurring of the glass housing which was all due to the added heat.

OK. I installed back my stock fog lights and tested the heat difference. The stock bulbs run hot but you can still touch the glass. The bulbs I bought run way hotter such that you cannot touch the glass. This is to all of you installing fog lights or replacing.

You SHOULD be able to place the back of your fingers on the exterior glass of the fog light enclosure without it burning your fingers. If you can't I would say beware of the bulb cause it may cause damage with time.

Thank you to everyone that posted.

Gen6

My MTEC's in my high, low and fogs have been in use for 17 months with no problem. My fogs are on at all time that the low beams are on and I have driven a lot at night.

Don't know what the cheap ones do.

i just bought me some nokya yellows which i haven't installed yet. h11 55W and i agree about the common sense thing, bulbs run hot period but i'm not so worried about it, shouldn't be a problem as it i haven't seen threads (even here on TN) about bulb lense cracking from water + heat or the housings melting. At most my only concern is damage to the wire harness from heating over bulbs that draw too much.
