Talking

step:
1.get a cup
2.get baking soda
3.get water
4.put baking soda and water in to cup
5.mix them together(water & baking soda) in the cup
6.get a rag or cloth
7.dip the rag or cloth in the cup that mix with water & baking soda
8.apply the stuff to where there is rust at the battery
9.clean up the mess that you make in step 8
10.take 2 step back and give yourself a pad on the back for a job well done

Baking soda works good but you can purchase a designated cleaner from any auto parts store that works better and doesn't make near as much mess.

I had a bottle of red stuff that I think was made by MOC. It worked very well.

Use a stiff bristle brush and make sure that you remove the cables to get all the corrosion.

Remove the negative battery cable first, and install the negative battery cable last.

if you are going the baking soda route, i recommend removing the battery. when i cleaned my battery, i got the stuff all over the place, especially using a wire brush to get the harder corrosion off. although this may just be in my case because i had a LOT of corrosion on it. enough that it took me half an hour, a flat head screwdriver, and about 3 cups of the baking soda mixture to even be able to remove the positive side clamp

That's why when I saw a hint of corrosion on my battery I said screw it and replaced it with an Optima.

Cheap batteries suck.

Many years ago I had an AC Delco battery leak (in my Formula) and the acid went into the positive cable all the way to the starter. My starter was so corroded that it looked like a Chia pet. Needless to say I didn't notice it until the black plastic tubing that protects the cable under the car turned to a liquid and ended up on my garage floor in a puddle. I had an extended warranty at the time and didn't have to pay for anything but as soon as the next battery showed a hint of leaking, I replaced it with an Optima also.
