Generation Gap? Not hardly!

Hi all,
I'm new to this forum, but not to Toyotas, especially the Camry. Just scored a new (well, new to my son) Camry this weekend. 1999 (Gen 4) LE with the V6. Car only has 113K miles and should be a great college car. Daughter has been driving her mother's '96 LE (Gen 3) for a couple years now, and has gone 164K miles on the I4, also a college car. My personal ride is the (Gen 5) 2002 SE V6 which I've owned since new. That thing has 143K on it and still purrs like new. So it appears in our household, there is no generation gap, with either the kids or the Camrys.

Here's what I'm worried about....will son's '99 V6 smoke my newer '02 in the acceleration department? I would think the earlier version is lighter curb weight, but I don't know if they had variable valve timing back then.

Motor on,

Cookinbikes

Gen6

Sorry, I dont have an answer to your question. But I have a comment. Now that you have a GEN 3, 4 and 5, I think you're due for a GEN 6. Obviously with a V6

First off, welcome to the forum and looks like your family is full of Camry's!

Both the '99 and '02 Camry's have the same engine, and from what I've gathered from Intellichoice and MSN Auto's, is that the '99 V6 has 194HP and the '02 V6 has 192HP, although I thought I remember hearing that the Gen 5 V6 had 210HP, but again i'm not sure.

yes....the 3.3 liter 3mz-fe produces 210hp in the later gen 5.5 SE V6
the earlier verions made due with the 3.0 liter 192hp 1mz-fe, which was a carryover for the 2002 model year, but recieved VVT-i for the 2003 model year. HP stayed the same for all versions of the gen 5's 1mz-fe
so yes, your son's 99 and your 02 should be about dead even in performance....you have him in the handling department tho SE FTW.
welcome to the forum....nice camry family too

Thanks for the welcome and tech tidbits. Sorry Venom 5-no pics yet. Will pick up the '99 V6 today from PO and get it registered and insured. Maybe then I can get them all together for a pic. I'm thinkin' Christmas card family photo maybe??!

BTW, it is time for me to start thinking about replacing the 2002. I have another son who is 16 with newly minted driver's license, and he's been hinting that he is interested in the car when it's time for a "hand me down".

actually the 3MZ-FE was rated at 225hp... the 1MZ-FE was initially rated at 192hp, but when it was introduced with VVT-i in the 2003 model, the hp rating was bumped up to 210hp...

You're a good Dad by teaching your kids good value in life for those "hand me down" quality cars. Now reward yourselve with a Gen6 SE V6.
Welcome to TN.

On that '99 v6, make sure you check it thoroughly for sludge and do any necessary cleaning before turning it over to your daughter. That year had serious issues if the oil was not changed every 3k religiously.

most of the Gen 3 & 4 guys have found that the 1MZ (even the 99's) dont really have the sludge problem that they are "notorious" for having ... even when changed a little bit late

my neighbor has a white 99 V6 and changes every 4500 (dont ask me why, i dont tell him what to do ) .... but i do know his is sludge free
