5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My 4 cylinder 2002 Camry XLE just does NOT want to shift up to 3rd gear when it is "cold". Originally, this just happened when the temperature was in the 40's or below, but this summer it was doing it even when the temps were in the upper 60's.
The dealer says there is nothing that can be done.
I live on a road with a 45 mph speed limit, and I hate having to drive with the RPMs in the 3,000 range for .7 miles until the car warms up and finally shifts up to 3rd & OD, or having to let it "warm up" on the car port. Both really kill the gas mileage.
I've added a silicon additive to the transmission with no positive results.
it does that on purpose so that the engine warms up faster... mine doesn't engage OD (5th gear) until the engine coolant reaches a certain temperature, i'm pretty sure it's the second hash mark on the engine coolant temp gauge...

Any suggestions?
As said before, it is designed to do this. You probably may have caused harm putting in a "silicon additive" to try and fix a problem that is not a problem. you should really drain and fill, or flush out that additive before it damages your transmission.

The trans will not shift into 0/D until the coolant temp is about 50F. The trans should still shift up to third gear. What did the dealer say was the problem or did they say it was “normal?” It is best not to add any additives to the trans oil.
Thinking about it a little more, If it did in fact occur during the warmer months as well, Your thermostat may be stuck open causing it to take longer to fully warm up. Just a thought.
