5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
And what's so special about that? I have to leave my Camry parked in an outside lot during lecture. During the winter, I often come back to find it "frozen" and possibly frozen over.
Well...this will be my first winter with the Camry, but all our other cars have met this condition.
I just let the engine idle till the needle drops to around 1000rpm. Then I start driving. The heater comes on in a few minutes.
Heat is "taken" from the engine so it's free in essence.
I keep 20 kilos of cat litter in the trunk in case I get stuck on ice somewhere this winter. Complete with brush, and 2 spare gallons of windshield fluid stuff.
Nothing is special about. just showing how your MPG is going to affected this winter.
Yea i've noticed also that my MPG has dropped some here in NYC. I thought it was because I threw on my snowboard rack, which it already does really effect your cars MPG. I haven't gauged it really so I'm not sure, I plan to drive up to the mtn this week, I'll be sure to fill a new tank and give it a run to see what I'm getting highway.
The Lowest I have gotten was 18.5MPG in stop and go traffic and 23.5MPG on the highway I have a little bit of a heavy foot sorry the V6 is tempting to run hard If I can traffic prevaling I like to cruise at about 85 MPH in a 65 MPH Zone on I-97 or Route 50 where this is the speed limit.
Yes, this is normal. As the temperature of the air decreases, the car adds more fuel causing less MPG. Im about 2 MPG lower now than I was in the summer due to the 30 degree temps.
Yes, Freaking normal. grrrr...&...burrrr... Except my Buick is almost 4mpg lower. Granted I warm it up first thing when I wake up at 4AM so it will idle for 10-15 mins before I get going. I can't stand to drive a cold car. I want warm engine and warm seats.
The XLE Camry is about 2mpg off right now. Mrs Dood rarely warms up the car. I just called her this morning from work to REMIND her to have our daughter warm it up a couple of mins before they leave. It is the garage car so it doesn't need as much warm up as my lonely Buick does sitting out in the elements...

I drop from about 28MPG to about 20MPG--that hurts my wallet for about 6 months a year here in Wisconsin :-(

Thats the way to do it. Gotta have your seat nice and warm before driving! What i HATEEEE if after school. I get out to start the car and im sitting in a COLD car for like 5 mins freezing my ass off(leather) while waiting for it to warm up.
Thats what happened to me, thats why I was just making sure I wasnt the only one with the same trend. Its like a 30% drop in fuel efficiency. (maybe?)
I dont see how he got 28MPG average anyways, unless it was 100% highway driving. Also in the winter you tend to let your car warm up longer, if it's snowing out your tires are spinning, your stuck at a slower speed longer, etc. It's not just the cold air itself.
for me, some reason my MPG shot up from 16.6 to 17.8 today -- 14.5 gallons of gas vs 258 miles (I still had 4 gallons left to go). it felt good knowing that a simple thing like ECU reset can assist in gas mileage and it's now relearning my driving habits over again.
