hey guys im thinking of cleaning the throttle body on my Gen5. After some research it looks like it will be a easy job.
Im planning to do it on my gen5 which has 100,000 km (62000Mi). Do you guys think i should clean it now or wait later? Also what improvements will this actually give me ? (not hp wise or any major improvements) but does it just allow the car to idle better and take in a bit more air?
To my knowledge i would remove the tube leading to the air filter and expose the throttle body, spray some Throttle body cleaner on it, scrub it, wipe it off, annd reassemble the intake? Can anyone here verify.
You can spray a little onto/into the throttle body and use a clean rag the soaked with throttle body cleaner. Push the throttle blade open and clean the frontside and backside of the blade itself as well as the surrounding throttle body areas.
This will keep the throttle blade free of buildup and hopefully keep the throttle blade from sticking. Sticking can cause failure and improper operation of the throttle body.
There is no significant performance gain, if any. It's purely preventative maintance.
Gen 5.5 and newer has electronic throttle. Can the butterfly valve be opened without damaging it by just pushing it open? I was thinking of putting my toolbox on the gas pedal with the car turned to on but not running.

Yes, you can open the throttle blade by gently pushing it open with your finger. I would not use anything other than your finger to open it, or hold it open. You don't want to scratch or nick the blade/plate or the throttle body itself.
