5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Just curious, now that my Gen 6 Camry is reaching 26k...
How much are you paying for transmission oil changes at the Toyota Dealer?
My refuses to change it saying it is stupid to change it before 80,000 and if I want to have it change, it will cost close to 300 bucks...
I do oil change regular every 3,500 but the car seems a bit sluggish lately and wonder if that attribute to the transmission oil needing to be replaced?
I know this question has been post before, but still want to get current feedback.

I spoke with a different service guy each time I do my oil change and ask for a transmission change, all of them said the same thing.
"We dont recommend changing the transmission fluid below 80,000 miles....The new 07 camry uses a World ATF which last 100,000 miles. If you want, it will cose $2xx.00 to change it. But if you do it under 50k, i think you are crazy and wasting your money blah blah blah...."
Change Automatic Transmission Fluid Only As Necessary.
Generally, it is necessary to change automatic transmission fluid only if your vehicle is driven under one of the Special Operating Conditions listed under one of the Scheduled Maintenance Guide or Owners Manual Supplement.
When changing the automatic transmission fluid, use only "Toyota Genuine ATF WS " (ATF JWS3324 or NWS9638) to aid in assuring optimum transmission performance.
Notice: Using automatic transmission fluid other than "Toyota Genuine ATF Type WS" may cause deterioration in shift quality, locking up of your transmission accompanied by vibration, and ultimately damage the automatic transmission of your vehicle.

Does that mean it is up to interpetation on what mileage to change the fluid? Hmm....
It means that the manufacture states that it is not necessary to change the fluid unless your vehicle is driven in severe operating conditions. But I personally would do it every 30k.

Is it typical for Gen 6 to be paying 200+ at dealership for this change?
Sorry, I am used to Honda Accord I had where it only cost a fraction

Interesting. I hope this thread continues b/c being a long-time former Honda owner, I always did these things myself. My questions are:
1) Should I buy a Gen 6 repair manual? (to do oil change to break job work)
2) Are these things easy to change?
3) Ballpark figure on price that I should be expected to pay?
1. repair manuals are always useful and great to have around. i have both the repair manual and wiring diagrams for my 2003 and i constantly refrence them. as for oil changes and brake jobs on your gen 6, theyre the same as with any other car. all u need to know special is how to change the canister oil filter, and thats as simple as sticking a 3/8 ratchet into the 3/8 hole in the canister and twisting counterclockwise, and cleaning the canister before replacing with OEM toyota filter...i can get you a DIY if needed
2. yes
3. cheap as hell if you buy your parts and do it yourself

Word. Bottom line is that toyota and every other car maker, really only wants to sell you another car as fast as possible, while you want to drive yours as LONG as possible - get the picture-
