08 Accord EX-L V6 Sedan Review (Comparison to the Camry)

Actually, I went there last weekend. I posted the review on a few other forums that I sit on, but somehow forgot to post it here:

My dad and I took an 2008 Accord EX-L V6 Sedan out for a spin today, and I came away being fairly impressed with the vehicle overall. The driving position was excellent (just like the Altima), as my knees did not come close to touching the steering wheel, which is an issue with the Camry and the new 2008 Malibu. The interior was also a substantial upgrade over the Camry, especially with regards to the materials and fit and finish. The center stack, which some criticize for its busy look, had a very modern and futuristic appearance to me. The use of a single button to control all functions was very efficient under my use.

On the road, the Accord was comparable to the Camry. The engines were equally strong, despite the lack of a 6th gear in the Accord. The differences in the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times between the Accord and Camry are not noticeable under normal driving. Acceleration was strong even with a loaded car and the A/C running. Unfortunately the Accord's V6 is still equipped with a timing belt, which will require replacement (timing belt, tensioner, water pump and drive belts) about every 100k miles at the cost of around $800. Belt driven engines must be quieter, as this engine was noticeably quieter than the Camry's, which is chain driven.

There were significant differences in the handling department between the Camry and the Accord. The Accord handled very well for a sedan of its size. It was similar to the 3.5SE Altima. The chassis felt very "tight" and the ride was VERY firm. Definitely too firm for a lot of people. The LE V6 Camry I was in several months ago was very soft in comparison, and exhibited lackluster handling.

The Accord does have several negatives. First, wind noise is still a huge issue with the Accord; it was absolutely awful at 70 mph. Very, very noticeable. I also wished bluetooth was available without the navigation option. In addition, I'm not too pleased about the replacement cost for the timing belt.

Still, if I had to pick between the Accord, Camry, Altima, and the 2008 Malibu, the Accord would be my choice. It offers a great driving position and interior, as well as good performance and respectable handling. The Camry's interior doesn't impress me, the driving position is poor in comparison to the Accord, and the 6-speed automatic's transmission has questionable reliability (though the jury is still out on the 2008 models). The Altima offers equal or better handling than the Accord, but the CVT transmission has had a spotty reliability record in the Murano, and the premium fuel requirement in addition to the poor fuel economy of the V6 makes operating costs too high.

P.S. I did drop by the local Chevy dealer on the way home to see the 2008 Malibu. The interior door panels lacked any cloth or leather inserts (all plastic), and my head was touching the roof when I sat in the rear seat. (I'm only 5'11") Also, my knees were nearly rubbing against the steering wheel. I didn't go on a test drive, so I can't comment any further.

My big problem with the new Accord is no touch screen nav and too many buttons. And I'm still trying to get used to the look, I always thought Accords looked good in the past but this one I don't know.

I can't comment on the Nav as I didn't try one out, but I loved the one button setup for controlling the XM radio on the EX-L V6. The control area may appear too "busy" in pictures, but in person the arrangement allows for quick changes to any setting. I personally thought that i was rather well-designed.

I can't comment on the interior of the Accord, but I have seen several on the road in the last few days. I find the exterior styling nothing short of atrocious. The car to me looks awkward and all wrong, which would be a huge barrier to me no matter how good the car is. Yes it's a matter of opinion but I quite honestly hate the styling.

As for the wind noise, how bad is it really? It seems odd to me that a car of its caliber would have wind noise issues.

The problem was that the day the test drive was performed, it was a rather windy day and the drive occurred along a very rough road. Of course this would exacerbate the road and wind noise.

It didn't seem much louder than my Saturn, but it was significantly louder than the 07 LE V6.

Thanks for putting up the comparo for us. It's always nice to read what others think that have actually been in the vehicles being compared.

I have no doubt the new Accord is a fine automobile. I just can't stand the look of the 08 Sedan.

If you already have a Saturn, then why test drive an Accord?

Because I want an additional car. I have a '96 SL2 and a '92 Previa.

I personally think looks are subjective. For one, if you look at a Camry LE or XLE, I don't think most would say it is the prettiest either. But the Camry SE is probably the best looking midsize on the market I say.

The Accord I think has a more matured look. From some angles it can be aggressive looking and very nice but if you look at the side/front view, I only see a car for 40-50 year olds.

I've been in a Camry SE and Accord EX-L. (Both with leather and navigation) I have to say the Accord definately has better materials used but its not perfect. The passenger side dash cubby has this hard plastic that scratches so easily. Navigation, the Camry's is easier to use but the Accord seems to have more options and I think the Accord is tuned toward the more tech savy person.

In the handling department, the Camry SE is definately more firm than the Accord or about the same. lf I had to rate handling and ride comfort heres my order:

1. Softest - Camry LE
2. Firm - Accord
3. Firmer - Camry SE
4. Firmest - Altima

The Altima would be my personal choice and I think the CVT is great.

I've ridden in a Altima 3.5SE Coupe and the handling/ride is about the same as the Accord, in my opinion. I've never been inside of/ridden/driven a Camry SE.

You need to take a test drive in a SE V6.

Probably won't. I don't like the driving position so it's out of the question.
