With smog checks getting tougher every year...there are only a couple ways to increase your horsepower and still pass, and even then i think id check the laws first -
-improve engine breathing. Swap the stock exhaust manifold for a performance exhaust manifold. This should gain you a few horsepower maybe 5 or 10.
-rebuild the engine, balance and blueprint it. Bore it out and put bigger pistons, have them put bigger valves and more aggresive camshafts for more power in the 2000 - 4000 rpm range.
-put on a turbo or super charger. Theres several posts from people that have done this and you will definitely gain alot of horsepower. You also risk breaking your crankshaft or pistons if you boost too much so you might want to change the crank for a stronger forged steel one and your pistons for stronger forgings too.
Beware that the delicate balance of smog controls, smooth idle and the stock computer settings may be upset by all this work, and you may wind up with a car that wont idle without shaking the fillings out of your teeth, or pass smog either.
