5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I just picked up my '08 XLE a few days ago and the Nav is not as accurate as my Garmin. In fact, I'm considering going back to the Garmin.
Don't think about it, just do it. The stock Nav is horrible and gives terrible routes no matter how you configure it. My Garmin is alot better. I wasted a ton of money by getting this in the Camry. My father got so frustrated with his Camry that he also went back to his Magellan.

I have the Nuvi 650 and love it. Very easy to program and get "on the fly" info/directions.
I have 5.1 and only a couple of missing roads so far. No issues so far. I have trained alot of people on nav systems and with time its all good.
Time will not correct an incorrect route unless a new version comes out. I used the Nav system on the Toyota and the Garmin at the same time and the Garmin gave the better route, a route I travel quite often so I know the best route.
Hm... I don't seem to share the same frustration with the navi in my car that you guys are having. Yes, I do also have a hand held navi and its pretty much comparable in the routes the car give.
But there is a new DVD out for the navigation system - its an update of both maps and software. We got it with our new '08 GS350 and so far its seems to be compatible and works fine in our '07 RX350, '07 ES350, and the '07 Camry as well.
I'd say go buy it and give it a try in your cars.

I'm assuming that having just picked up my '08 XLE a few days ago that it would have the latest version. I'll have to check. For the time being though I'm sticking with my trusty Garmin.

You and I have debated this before. We live only about 12 miles from each other, so I have to assume we get similar routers. What does it route "incorrectly"? Are you using the flexibility of the "3 Route" mapping to pick the best one based on traffic?

I tried every possible option to see if it would route me differently on my trek to our Condo in Myrtle Beach. No matter how the nav was set it consitantly wanted me to drive from Gainesville to rt. 66 to 495 to 95. In comparison to my Garmin C550 it would take me a minimum of 1.5 hours longer to make the trek to our Condo. The Garmin would accurately route me down rt. 29 to rt. 17 to 95. It's routes to my work were absolutely terrible. Going from Gainesville to Herndon (worldgate drive), the Toyota Nav always wants to take the Westfields Blvd. exit instead of going to either Frying Pan Rd or McLearin adding at least an extra 15 minutes on a 35 minute commute. It doesn't route incorrectly. It will get you to your destination, but it will normally take you the longest (time wise) route. My neighbor and my father both prefer their portable units for better routes to their destinations. The Nav did have some nice features, but ultimately fails at it's primary goal.
That's interesting. Whenever I am going to VA Beach (or anywhere south for that matter) it routes me down 29/17 to Fredericksburg. I can't believe that starting in Warrenton versus Gainesville is going to make that much of a difference.
Of course, there are times that it won't give me the route I want but it is because the route I want isn't necessarily the shortest or quickest using typical speed limits by road type. I just know it's better from experience.

Once I get past rt. 15, then it wants to route me down 29 to 17, but up to that point it is strong in it's conviction to go 66 to 495. On Linton Hall road coming from say, rt. 28 it wants me to turn right on 29 (north) and then it says to make an immediate U turn by the train tracks to go south. Why not just go south? Garmins, Lowrance and Magellan all say to turn left. Our Nissan Quests system is a little better in route calculation, but we still prefer our Garmin.
I set the Toyota Nav system to take me from my home near Cincinnati tp my hotel in Indianapolis this afternoon. It actually got me lost. I took my Garmin 650 along "just in case" and sure enough had to use it. I'll admit, the hotel was set back off the road a bit but the Toyota Nav had me make a U-turn an 8th of a mile before the hotel. This is a company car so I do not have the $'s invested in the system. I'd be pissed if I did.
