Question Air Con. vibrations?

Alright, sometimes when I am driving with the windows down, I stop at a red light.

I roll the windows up, and crank the a/c to about mid/high.

For a second, and only for a second, I can feel a slight vibration from somewhere under the hood, then it goes away.

It seems to only do this for a second when I crank the a/c up.

Is it normal? Anyone else feel the same thing sometimes?

That's the clutch on the air con compressor engaging. It's driven by the serpentine belt and when the clutch engages, the compressor is static so it will put a shock, for lack of better terms, on the belt because it engages suddenly. At idle, the engine may not have enough power to drive the compressor and keep idling so the RPMs might fall slightly and then rise again when the ECU compensates by adjusting the throttle.

Next time you do that, watch the tachometer. It will probably fluctuate slightly.

+1. From the description given, that seems to be the most plausible reason.

First up, this isn't the biggest problem in life. You pay good money for a car and you are curious what kind of noises are what....this is the place to ask. Am I wrong? Sorry if you have had "worse" problems with your Camry, but don't for one second assume that this is one of my "biggest" problems in life...

Everyone has to start somewhere. Sorry I didn't come to the forum being ASE certified.
