5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Do any Gen 6 owners add weight to their car in the winter?
Seeing as how winter is upon us I was wondering have any of the Gen 6 owners had problems with slipping and sliding? Last year with my '90 Cam was slipping and sliding all over the place. And my mom said the '88 and '00 Camry would always slip and slide until my dad put bricks in trunk to wiegh the car down, I did the same to my old one last year. Does anyone else add weight totheir car to keep it from slipping and sliding so much?
Ive always had front wheel drive cars and never put anything to make them heavier.. this is my first camry and i know that they are worse in the snow than my old fords but i just got some studded snow tires for the winter and drive for the conditions

When I had a RWD p/u truck, I would put several hundred lbs of sand bags in the bed. Served two purposes, weight over the drive axle and sand to put on the road should I get stuck or on ice.
I don't bother with FWD. To me, the only difference between having a FWD and AWD/4WD is whether or not I would even go out or into a certain area. FWD can get around just as well as AWD if you don't drive like an idiot and stay on treated roads. If there is a foot of unplowed snow on the road, you shouldn't be out on it unless you are in a 4WD (and essential personnel).
If there is ice, it doesn't matter what you are driving. The only difference is whether it is your front, rear or all 4 tires spinning.

I was driving through some small streets yesterday and they're all iced-in of course.
There was a big red Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi in front of me. The street was going uphill probably with no more than 15% incline. So when we reached the stop sign, he could not get moving again.
His rear tires just spun and spun. The funny thing is how I backed up, and then easily went around him. Even as I reached the next stop sign, he had still not made it past the first.
Granted it was not a fair comparison - I had X-Ice tires on - from the look of his, he had those usual "off-road" all-seasons that the truck comes with. And the other major difference was that I wasn't an idiot to keep on flooring it.
Back to the question...I do not weigh down my car since it's FWD. However, I do have 20 kilos of cat litter in the trunk in case I really get stuck somewhere.

Well when my was driving both the '00 and '88 Camrys she said weighing them down helped alot. Now I did weigh down my 90 last year but that thing had some cheap ass tires so it really made no difference.
i dont put weight in the camry, but on a side note, a few days ago, i got off work at 2:30 and went to eat pho with a co-worker at some plaza. but to get into the plaza you had to drive down the 45 degree decline....that was easy, but coming up from there with some 25cm of snow proved to be a challenge. during my battle with the hill, the new 08 accord was behind me honking at me the whole time when he can clearly see me stuggling to get up with 4 season tires.... halfway up my other friends turn in... but i cant back up cuz the asshole accord was right up my ass honking... but i finally got up and i looked back and guess what? the accord couldnt get up! so me and my friend decided to make a U turn back into the plaza while flashing my high beams and honking at the same time.... m friends and i then parked to the side and watched him try to get up... he tried to backup and start again, but he had this retarded angle and drove up the curb behind him...... he did that 3 times, so i figured he gave up trying to backup..... so it took him about 5-6 minutes to finally get up that incline while my friends and i got a good laugh out of the accord

Hahaha good story. What goes around comes around. I've always though that only certain "types" of people buy Hondas to begin with...often people who are cocky without being able to back it up; people who are battling "inner" complexes.
