If you don't like your car stalling and leaving you stranded, I'd say that it's critical. It is the only means of connecting the crankshaft and camshafts.
As stated above, if you plan on keeping the car for some time I would recommend replacement of the waterpump if it has been replaced recently. They commonly fail at about 100,000 miles. It costs next to nothing to replace with the timing belt replacement.
