2002 V6 Transmission

So I have owned my 02 SE for about 5 years now. Never had any problems with anything other than a front strut I broke due to a bad pothole. I jumped in my car the other day to run some errands at lunch and it started behaving strangely. IE. lurching and droping out of gear. I had no prior issues with it, no indications, anything that I could tell. So the following week I was going to take it in and see what was up at my local dealer. Well I made it to sunday with no other issues. I got in the car put it in reverse and it wasnt there. I had nothing. iIt was like being in neutral except it wouldnt even roll backwards. So I called a tow truck and the idiot couldnt get it out of the parking spot due to other cars and whatnot. He had no jack with him and the car wouldnt roll backward. After about an hour of he reving the engine and monkeying around with it to my dismay he finally had 3 cars move and was able to get in behind and tow it. I took it to the dealer who informed me it was "an internal problem with the transmission and I needed a whole new one at the price of $4k" Not knowing a lot about cars, but knowing enough to know that seemed high I asked if it still drove in forward and was it safe to drive it home. They informed me iit still worked in forward and I could pick it up anytime. So I attempted to drive it home and got about 3 miles. At this point I could definately tell there was something seriously wrong. Lots of grinding, slipping, etc. Needless to say another tow bill later I had my car home. now with no reverse OR drive. I called around and got some estimates on a rebuild. I chose one of the bigger names around and decided I was better off with a warranty than some cheap shady mechanic. two days later I get a call from the shop and I am told that the internal gears "have welded themselves together" So now I am in the market for a new one and the shop is having issues finding one. So I need some info as I'm trying to save myself some money on it.

Does anyone know if the U140F transmission was the only one for the 02 V6?
I have found some low milage used ones for cheap, but they dont list model numbers. If that is the only transmission for 02 V6s I'de be more comfy knowing those are an option without a part number.

Next question is what other models/years use the U140F tranny?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the info! Looks like my shop found a used one with low miles for $1800. Looking at the price you listed I'm thinking this is the way to go. Still going to be about $3000 out the door, but better than the $4000 at the dealer I suppose.

Mabey once I pay this off I can tackle the replacement of my factory nav with a Sat radio one... I'll have to troll a bit here and see if the newer ones will work with the wiring in my 02.

1. Before you go and tear out your transmission change the fluid and add an entire bottle of lucas ATF additive

2. If that doesn't fix the problem you can prob get a trans garage to change it for half of what the dealer is asking. I once had to replace a trans on my 8 cyl. lincoln towncar and i paid less than 1500. Get a quote from every transmission specialist in your city and have them compete for your business.

one other thing that could save you money. call around your local salvage yards and see if you can find a U140F for less than $1800. if you do then buy it and bring it to the shop and tell them to install it. I always seem to find parts for cheaper than what the mechanics or body shops "say" they can get it for.

The on line price for part 305103321184 is 2100.65 plus a 1000.00 core charge from Toyota of Dallas. Other on line dealers should be similarly priced. I'd consider buying this way or negotiating a price to install based on this sort of information.

Alls you have to do is change the trans oil without bothering to drop the pan. You need a 10 mm hex socket to get the plug out, and 3 or 4 qts of Toyota TIV fluid from the dealer (they are the only people that sell it and you cant use any other kind).

let me know if i am wrong, but i think the transmission oil/filter change is not on the main. schedule for 2002 camry's. I don't think it ever has to be done until your transmission fluid is brown/black.

And that's probably the reason why his went out - by following this "service reccomendation". I change my tranny fluid every 25,000 m regardless of what they say. i've owned 10 cars and never replaced a tranny yet.

yea changing fluid every 25-30k is cheap insurance, and its very easy to do at least on the A541E. I love how Toyota now has "lifetime" fluid in the car. That's a good marketing ploy for them to lower maintenance costs for owners as well as sell more rebuilt transmissions!

because they dont expect anyone to keep a toyota for more than 200000 miles. so it will at least last that long.. lifetime or not.. we still change them
