5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Before anyone starts telling me to search, I know there have been a few threads on the topic and there are TSB's for the problem. I first only heard the squeak when baking up and only under certain circumstances such as how hard I pressed on the brakes. Now it does it virtually every time I first drive the car after it's been sitting for a while, both going in reverse and driving forward.
This leads me to my actual question. Is this just a noise issue, or are the brakes actually worn down to the point of needing replacement's already? I don't have a huge problem with just the noise, but I want to make sure that it's not causing unnecessary brake pad wear or any actual damage.
Same here... I think the TSB adds some shims to the brakes to stop the noise. Take your front wheels off, I bet the pads are OK. It is just another anoying Toyota quality issue!!
I had this problem with my 07 when new. Having TSB done solved the problem. I suggest you take it to your dealer and ask to have the TSB done, or at least get on notice with your dealer that the problem exists. The TSB really just replaces the brake pad holding clips in the caliper with some newer/tighter ones. It's not a big deal. I doubt your pads are worn at 16,000 miles.
The new camry had so many problems it deserved its own stickied thread of all its bulletins
Anyways my breaks DID squeak for a bit at low speeds than all of a sudden it stoped :S i was going to get the TSB done too but i guess not. The only thing i still have to do is the hesitation one.

I plan on making an appointment with the dealer to get it checked out, however I'm trying to determine if it only happens after the car sits for several hours, or just 30 minutes or so. Because I really don't want to leave the car at the dealer overnight just for them to say they never found a problem.
you know honestly geoff, i wouldn't bother taking it to the dealer, it's nothing really... both of my camry's squeak when you let off the brakes really slowly, and the brake pads aren't worn, and the rotors definitely aren't warped... i think it's just one of those quirks with camry's, there's nothing wrong with it... if it would make you feel any better, maybe next time you take it in for service, ask them to lubricate the breaks?

I also recorded a quick video:
Yep, sounds like mine, and looks like mine. I think I will live with it untill the pads need changing, then I will buy the OEM clips, and fix it myself. The more you can keep the dealer away from your car, the better off it will be.

As I mentioned before I'm not really that worried with just the sound, as it usually only happens when I haven't driven the car for a few hours. I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't causing any kind of premature brake pad/rotor wear.
If my car is still under 36K miles and the brake pads need to be replaced, i'll ask them then to complete the TSB.
