5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I just took in my 08 Camry LE (4cy) for it's first oil change, I only had 1100 miles on it, but I have always done a break in oil change early. I bought it at Modern Toyota in Winston Salem, NC. Thought I would let them do the first oil change and look it over. While I was there I was going to buy a case of filters and enough factory oil to break it in until I went to full synthetic, (10k or so).
I asked for 5W20 and the service guy told me they didn't have it, they used Kendall 5W30 on everything. I got my car back and sure enough they put 5W30 Kendall synthetic blend in it. 5W20 IN ON THE FU*KIN# OIL CAP..!! Thats a load of Horse Sh*t.... I read the factory manual, I know the spec is 0-20 or 5-20. AND IT'S ON THE OIL CAP!!
Anyway, I'm not really worried about it but I drove the 6 miles home and I'm gonna change it back to 5W20 conventional. Unless a TSB has been issued for something I pretty much stick by the factory specs. Especially while its under warranty!!! I would hate for someone to haggle me about my warranty because I was using the wrong oil. I know Toyota had an engine sludge problem a while back, so I'm sticking to to factory specs. Only other thing is that I change my oil closer to 3500 - 4000 instead of the factory 5k.
Slow down, you are over reacting and wasting oil. My 1998 Camry, witch I have owned since it was new, runs like a dream after 283,000 miles and I change the oil every 7000 miles or more. And with no preference in oil brand and viscosity close to spec 5-30
The engine is of the oil sludge type. That was only happening on the east coast in winter
were the car was not being driven for long periods of time.
I used 10 w30 in my corolla for 10 years before I finally saw the 5w30 on the oil cap last year or so. This latest oil change is the first time it has ever had the correct oil in it. Thing runs like a top
You need to take a deep breath and google a little to learn more about oil viscosity. The 0w-20 thing is more about meeting the CAFE standards than it is about maintaining the engine in pristine condition. 5w-30 is just fine and it was done by a dealer. Don't be wasteful.

Why don't you call Toyota corporate at 1-800-331-4331 and talk to someone in customer service. Discuss with them the recommended oil viscosity and the reason behind it. Tell them what the dealer has put in the car and your feelings about this. If nothing else, you will now be on record with Toyota corporate about what oil was put in to your car by one of their dealers. If you do have engine problems down the road (and I don't think you will), this situation will be noted on your file. This may also put your mind at ease.

The first number doesn't matter so much because when the oil warms up, it will become whatever the weight the second number is. The first number is the weight when cold.
In such matters i use the "what is more likely" test...is it MOST likely that if you later have a problem due to use of wrong grade of oil for 3000 miles (but you are not going to) -..is it likely that Toyota is going to rip the engine apart, do an oil analysis with computer spectrometer and those tesla coils zapping sparks like from the movies, and say "A-HA! He used 5-30! WARANTY VOIDED! MUWAHAAHAHAHA!!!"

I did that just for curiousity.
Was told Toyota leaves it up the dealer what they put it....jeez
Sounds like Toyota is just doing CYA with CAFE standards.
Some past stories are really creative...
Some owners were told "Oh your car requires SPECIAL oil" and charged them an arm and a leg for 5w-20. Some didn't get told this until after they picked their car up.
Glad I change my own oil.

trust me the extra +10 weight wont huet anything
so stop hyperventalating....get a brown bag and brethe in...and breteh out

So the brand name "Toyota" on the bottle is just Kendall? Or did I just read that wrong?
